Be it known that I, LUDWIG VIDLAK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and `State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag- Frame Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates, generally, to improvements in bag-frames, and the like; and, the invention has reference, more particularly, to an improved construction of bag-frame for handbags, chatelaines, purses and similar articles, with particular reference to a novel catch or fastening means for retaining the frame in closed condition.
The invention has for its particular object to provide a novel, simple, cheap and easily manipulated latch or catch fastening means for bag-frames, and the like, the same being adapted for use on various types of frames, and the same serving not only to perform the necessary mechanical functions for retaining in closed condition the members of the frame, but also, by reason of the construction and arrangement thereof, being adapted to provide an ornamental eifect in connection with the frame.
Another objectv of the present invention is to provide a novel construction of latch or catch fastening means, which is peculiarly adapted to perform its functions in connection with reversible bag and purse f "ames, in either of the operative positions of the latter.
Other objects of this invention, not at this time more vparticularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the same.
ith the various objects of the present invention in view, the same consists, primarily, in the novel latch orcatch fastening means for bag or purse frames hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the several novel arrangements and combinations of the various parts as well as in the details of the construction thereof, all of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth in the following speciication, and then finally embodied in the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specifican tion.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which5 Figure l is a side elevation of a bagframe provided with the novel construction of latch or catch fastening means made according to and embodying the principles of my present invention; Fig. 2 is a top edge view of the same in closed position; Fig. 3 is a top edge view of the same in opened position; and Fig. e is an end elevation of the same.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the hereinabove described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings the reference character l indicates a complete bag-frame, comprising a frame-section 2 and a frame-section 3 each provided, at their ends, with perforated ears t. llhe perforated ears of said frame-section 2 coperate or register with the perforated ears of said frame-section 8, so that a pivot-pin or rivet 5 may be passed therethrough to pivotally connect said frame-sections together. The reference character 6 indicates a reversible frame-section adapted to be connected with said frame- sections 2 and 3 so that it may be turned around to position the same selectively either on one side or the other of said frame- sections 2 and 3. This is accomplished by means of hinge-links 7, one end of each hinge-link being' pivotally journaled on the pivot-pin or rivet 5 of said pivotally connected frame- sections 2 and 3, and the other endof each hinge-link being pivotally secured to the perforated ears 8 of said reversible frame-section 6 by means of a pivot-pin or rivet 9. It will, of course, be apparent that by thus providing said reversible frame-section G in connection with the pivotally connected frame- sections 2 and 3, the complete bag-frame is adapted to support a reversible bag-body which may be turned inside out at will, to expose one of its two ornamental sides of varying design, material or color, all oit' which is old and well known in the art.
My present invention provides a novel construction of.fastening means for such a reversible bag-frame, which is adapted to function properly both in one position and in the reversed position of the members of the bag-frame; that is, the novel fastening means operates to maintain the frame-sections in closed relations, whether the reversible frame-section t5 is positioned on one side or the other of said pivotally connected frame-sections Q and 3, as above described.
T he novel construction of fastening means comprises, therefore, the following elements. Secured upon the top edge of said framesection 2, by any suitable means, is a raised or up\ Yardly bowed loop-member 10, providing a receiving opening 11 between its body and the said frame-section. Said loop-member 10 is off-setto the left of the central portion of the frame-section 2, and the end of said loop-member, which extends toward the central portion of the frame-section 2, may be turned upwardly, as at 12, and the free end of said upturned portion 12 provided with a ball-catch 13. In like manner, secured upon the top edge of said frame-section 3, by any suitable means, is a raised or upwardly bowed loop-member l-l, providing a receiving opening 15 between its body and the said frame-section 3. Said loop-member l-l is offset to the right of the central portion of the frame-section 3, and the end of said loop-member, which extends toward the central portion of the frame-section 3, may be turned upwardly, as at 1G, and the free end of said upturned portion 1G provided with a ball-catch 17. Said respective ball- catches 13 and 17, thus provided, are adapted to snap or spring past each other when said frame- sections 2 and 3 are moved into closed relation one to the other, thereby serving to retain said frame-sections Q and 3 in such closed relation. It will, of course, be understood, that said loop-members 10 and 1l, together with their respective upturned portions 12 and 1G and ball- catches 13 and 17, may be given any desirable ornamental configuration or design, so long as the structural relation of the said loop-members to the respective frame-sections is such that the said receiving openings 11 and 15 are maintained unobstructed.
Secured upon the top edge of said reversible frame-section 6, by means of rivets 18, or in any other suitable manner, so as to be centrally disposed thereon, is a catchplate 19. Connected with the left-hand end of said catch-plate 19 is a catch-piece 20, provided at its extremity with an outwardly and laterally projecting convex latch-tongue 21, and an oppositely or inwardly and laterally projecting catch-member 22 provided on its under side with a concave receiving portion Q3. In like manner, connected with the right-hand end of said catch-plate 19 is a catch-piece 34, provided at its extremity with an in\f*ardly and laterally projecting convex latch-tongue Q5, and an oppositely o1' outwardly and laterally projecting catchmember 2G provided on its under side with a concave receiving portion Q7. lt will be understood that said catch-plate 19 and its respective catch-pieces 20 and Q-l may be provided with any desirable ornamenta characteristics or configuration, so long as the same include and do not interfere with the operative and proper projection of the respective latch- tongues 21 and 25 and catch-members :2Q and QG. Either of said members 22 and 26 may be used also as finger-pieces for depressing the ends of the catch-pieces 20 or Z-l so as to remove the latch-tongues 21 and Q5 from their frictional holding engagement with the respective loop-members, as will be cleary evident.
Formed upon the top edge surface of said frame-section 3 to the left of said loopmember 14e, and in proper position to be engaged by said catch-member 22, when said reversible frame-section G is closed against ,faid frame-section 3, is a catch-lug or teat Q8. In like manner, formed upon the top edge surface of said frame-section 2, to the right of said loop-member 10, and in proper position to be engaged by said catch-member 26, when said reversible frame-section 6 is turned into reversed arrangement so as to close against said frame-section 2, is a catolilug or teat Referring now to the drawings, wherein the reversible frame-section 6 is illustrated in that relation to the pivotally connected frame- sections 2 and 3 which permits of the same being closed against the frame-section 3, it will be observed that when the same is so closed, the catch-member 22 will spring over the said catch-lug or teat 2S of the frame-section 3, so that said catch-l ug or teat 28 is received in and embraced or caught by the receiving portion Q3 of said catvchmember 22, and at the same time said latchtongue 25 passes beneath said loop-member 111, entering the receiving opening 15 thereof. Said latch-tongue 25 being convex and its apex lying in a slightly higher plane than the apex of said receiving opening` 15, it will spring or yield against the loop-niember 14; so that when projected through the magnet same it will rise and positively engage the saine, and thus serve together with the cooperation of said catch-member 2.2 with the catch-lug or teat 28 to retain said reversible frame-section G in closed relation to said frame-section 3. Then said frame-section 2 is closed against the opposite side of said frame-section 3, the respective ball- catches 13 and 17 will spring past each other and mutually engage each other to retain said frame-section 2 in closed relation to said frame-section 3. Thus it will be readily understood that the three frame-sections malring up the complete bag-frame are positively fastened together in closed relation by my novel fastening means, thus described; and it will also be understood that, by manipulating the said ball- catches 13 and 17, the frame- sections 2 and 3 may be moved to relatively open position without disturbing the closed relation of said reversible framesection G to said frame-section 3.
If desired, the reversible frame-section G may be turned over or reversed so as to close against the frame-section 2 instead of against the frame-section 3, as is above described. When thus arranged it will be apparent that the catch-member 2G will spring over the said catch-lug or teat 29 of the frame section 2, so that said catch-lug or teat 29 is received in and embraced er caught by the` receiving portion 27 of said catchmemlier Q6, which in said reversed position of the frame-section 6 will project toward the frame-section 2, and at the same time said latch-tongue 2l will pass beneath said loop-member l0, entering the receiving opening ll thereof. Said latch-tongue 2l eing conveX and its apex lying in a plane slightly higher than the apex of said receiving opening ll, it will spring' or yield against the loop-member l0 so that when projected through the same it will rise and positively engage the same, and thus serve together with the coperation of said catchmember 26 with the catch-lug or teat 29 to retain said reversible frame-section G in closed relation to said frame-section 2. rllhe ball- catches 13 and 17 will, under these conditions, also operate to independently retain in closed relation the said frame- sections 2 and 3, as above previously described.
lt will thus be clearly evident that my present invention comprised in the novel fastening means above described, provides a very efficient yet easily and simply manipulated catch means peculiarly adapted for use on reversible bag-frames of the kind described, although it will also be apparent from the subsequent description that modiiications of the said novel fastening means may also be advantageously used in connection with the simple two part bag-frame as well.
Referring now to Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawings, :i have illustrated thereby a two part img-frame to which is applied a novel fastening means which embodies the principles of my present invention. ln the said figures of the drawings, the reference character 30 indicates a frame-section and 3l a companion frame-section pivotally connected together at their ends by means of pivot-pins or rivets 32. Secured upon the top edge of said frame-section 30, adjacent to each end thereof, by any suitable means, are raised or upwardly bowed loop-members 33, providing receiving openings 3ft. One end of each loop-member may be curled upwardly and over, or otherwise formed, to provide an eye-portion 35 for the attachment to the bag-frame of a suitable handleportion or hand-strap (not shown). Secured upon the top edge of said frame-section 31, in proper positions so as to coperate with said loop-members 33, when the frame-sections are closed together, by any suitable means, are catch-pieces 3G, each provided at one extremity with a convex latch-tongue 3'? adapted, when the framesections are closed together, to spring beneath said loop-members 33, through the receiving' openings 3st-, to positively engage the saine, thus serving to retain said framesections in said closed relation one to the other.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the several arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, as described in the foregoing specification and as dened in the claims appended to said specification, without departing from the scope of my present invention. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the said devices and parts as set forth in the foregoing specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

In a device of the kind described, the combination with pivoted frame-sections of an upwardly bowed loop-member secured to one of said frame-sections, a raised catolilug connected with the same frame-section and spaced longitudinally from said loopmember, a catch-plateV secured to another frame-section, a laterally projecting convex latch-tongue connected with one end of said catch-plate, a laterally projecting catchmember having a concave depression on its under side connected with the other end of said catch-plate, said latch-tongue being adapted to spring beneath and then engage said loop member and said catch-member being adapted to spring over and engage said catch-lug when said respective framesections are closed together.

In a device of the kind described, the combination with a pair of pivoted 'tramesections of an upwardly bowed loop-member secured to each frame-section, an inwardly directed end of each loop-member being turned upwardly, a ball-catch connected with the extremity of each upwardly turned end of said loop-members adapted to spring past and mutually engage each other when said 't 'ainesections are closed, a raised catch-lug connected with each frame-section and spaced longitudinally :trom said loopmember thereof, a reversible iirame-section pivot-ally connected with said pair ot pivoted traine-sections, a catch-plate secured to said reversible frame-section, oppositely and laterally projecting convex latch-tongues connected respectively with opposite ends of said catch-plate, and oppositely and laterally projectingl catch-members having receivin g depressions on their under sides connected respectively with opposite ends of said catch-plate, and extending in a direction laterally opposite to that et the latehtongue, for the purposes described.

In a device et the kind described, the combination with a pair of pivoted frame sections ot means for retaining the saine in closed relation, an upwardly bowed loopmember secured to one ot said traine sections, a raised catch-lug connected with the same frame-section and spaced longitudinally from said loop-inember, a third tramesection pivoted to said pair of pivoted frame-sections, a catch-plate secured upon said third iframe-section, a laterally projecting convex latch-tongue connected with one end o said catchplate, a laterally project ing catch-member having a concave depression on its under side connected with the other end of said catch-plate, said latchtongue being adapted to spring beneath and then engage said loopmeniber and said catch-member being adapted to spring over and engage said catch-lug when said third frame-section is closed against said pair of pivoted trame-sections.

In combination with a pair of pivoted traine-sections, a loop -meniber mounted upon one of said frame-sections, and a catch-plate mounted upon the other framesection, said catch-plate being provided with a latch-tongue adapted to be brought into holding engagement with said loop-member, and a c: tch-member upon said catch-plate, said catch-member extending in a direction opposite 'from that of the latch-tongue and serving as a ngerpiece.
