COMBINATION STEP-LADDER AND IRONING-BOARD.
Application led January 2, 1917.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, JACOB Aunss and SAMUEL Buisman, both subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Step-Ladders and Ironing Boards; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaiiis to make and use the saine.
The present invention relates to a convertible article of furniture and more particularly to a combination step ladder and ironing board.
An object of the present invention is to provide a detachable ironing` board which .may be connected to an ordinary step ladder whereby the former may be easily and readily presented to use7 but when not in use it can be folded upon the step ladder so as to take no additional space and only slightly increase the weight thereof or the ironing board may be readily removed from the step ladder.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a strong, durable and ethcient device of the character aforesaid which is very simple in construction, compara-tively inexpensive in the cost of manufacture, thereby rendering the same commercially desirable.
lVith the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear as the description continues, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, conibination and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been shown the simple and preferred form of the invention7 it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details herein exhibited, but the right is hereby reserved to any changes, alterations or modifications to which recourse may be had that come within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing the etliciency of the same.
In the accompanying drawings:

ladder and ironing board embodying the present invention; and,
Fig. 2 is al vertical sectional view taken through the saine when folded.
Ille refer now more particularly to the accompanying drawings wherein `like and correspondiiig parts are designated by siniilar reference characters throughout the several views. 1
The step ladder herein shown comprises the side rails 1 which are connected by means of the usual rungs or steps 2 and a top step 3 is arranged at the top of the side rails. Connected to the top step 3 and the side rails 1 are the usual side bearing plates 4l. The prop for supporting the step ladder comprises two side rails 7 which are reinforced by the transverse bars 8 and the diagonal bars 9. These bars 8 and 9 are secured to the inner face of the rails 7. Connectiiig the side plates l is the usual round or rod 10 to which is pivotally connected the side rails of the prop and the prop is connected and braced to the side rails of the rod by means of the usual foldable and .locln ing brace 11. In the foregoing an ordinary household foldable step ladder is shown and described and the purpose of the present invention is to provide an ironing board which may be readily connected thereto or carried therewith.
This ironing board comprises a board 12 which may be of the usual configuration of an ordinary ironing board having its inner end pivotally and detachably connected to the rod 10 and its opposite end is supported by means of a pair of legs 13 which are connected to the lower face of the ironing board by means of the hinges 11. The supporting legs 13 are braced by means of the cross bars 15 and are connected to the ironing board by means of thc foldable braces 16 which are the same as the braces 11. When presenting the ironing board for use it may be set up as better illustrated in Fig. 1, but in folding the ironing board upon the step ladder the legs 13 may be swung upon their hinged connections and rest against the lower face of the ironing board 12. The ironing board is then released and will the rails 7 upon the bars 8 and 9 and the weight of the board 12 will hold the legs 13 within the prop section of the ladder whereby the ironing board may be readily folded rest between upon the step ladder without taking` up any additional room and only adding a slight amount of weight thereto. When it is desired, the pivotally mounted lugs or latches 17 may be connected to the rails 7 so as to lock the ironing board in place within the prop section of the step ladder, thereby pern'iitting the step ladder to be folded and preventing the ironing,` board from being swungout of folded position. rlhe detachable and pivoted connection between the board l2 and the prop section of the step ladder comprises a pair of spaced hooks 1G which arc connected to the rod and it is obvious that when it is so desired the board li) ma)Y be readily detached from the step ladder and permitted to be connected to any other articles of fln'niture.
lla-ving thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;
l. A combination step ladder and ironing board comprising' a step ladder consisting` of ay step portion and a prop portion, a rod extending transversely of said prop p0rtion for pivotally connecting' the ladder to the step portion, an ironing board pivotally connected to said rod supporting legs carried by one end of said ironing board and said ironing board and supporting legs adapted to rest within said prop portion when in their folded position for the purpose specified.
2. A convertible article of furniture of the character described comprising a step ladder consisting, of a step portion, a rod carried by said step portion and extending transversely thereof, a prop portion pivotally connected to said rod, an ironing` board, a pair of hooks carried by said ironing board and adapted to be detachably and pi'votally connected to said rod, supporting; legs hingedly connected to the outer end of said ironing` board, said supporting legs and .ironing board adapted to rest within said prop portion when in their folded position and latch members carried by said prop portion for locking said ironing board within. said prop portion for the purpose specified.
ln witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands.
JACOB ARBESS. SAMUEL BRISKER.
