UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HILAND H. KENDRIGK, OF FULTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOHN W. THROOP, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN COMBINED STEP-LADDERS AND lRONlNG-BOARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,738, dated December 23, 1873; application filed I November 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HILAND H. KnNDrnoK, of Fulton, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented an Improved Combination Step-Ladder and Ironing-Board; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification- Figure 1 being a side elevation of the stepladder separate as arranged for use; Fig. 2, a rear view of the same; Fig. 3, a view of the lower side of the ironing-board separate; Fig. 4, a side elevation of the combined step-ladder and ironing-board,forming thereby an ironingtable.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
The step-ladder is peculiarly constructed. It has an outer frame, A, with a landing-step, a, at the top, and an inner frame, B, provided with a series of steps, I) b, which are pivoted at 0 near the middle, so, as to swing out and in inside of the, frame A; and, when in use as a step-ladder, the inner frame is shut into the outer frame, and fastened thus by buttons 01 d, or their equivalent. The ladder also has a hinged or swinging frame or legs, 0, as shown most clearly in Fig. 1. It also has a swinging brace, D, hinged, at the upper end, to the frame A, and having a series of notches, ff, near the lower end. This brace, when the step-ladder is used as such, hangs down behind the ladder out of the way, as seen in Fig. 1; but when the step-ladder has its two frames, A and B, opened in the form of a cross, as shown in Fig. 4, to compose the legs and frame of the ironing-table, the notches f f of the brace-bar bear upon one of the steps, or a cross-bar of the step-ladder, and not only thereby prevent frames A and B from settling down, but, by shifting different notches to the cross-bar or step, the frame is adjusted to difierent heights to form a table of varying height.
The ironing-board E is or may be of ordinary form, as shown in Fig. 3; but the under side, near one end, has two cavities or notches, h h, which fit upon the end of the frame B of the step-ladder, as shown in Fig. 4; and near the other end it has a long transverse notch or groove, 6, which fits upon one edge of the landing-step of the frame A, as seen in the same figure, which shows the combination of the step-ladder and ironing-board, so as to form an ironing-table. There are also elastic loops l l on the under side of the ironing-board near the transverse groove i, which, when the ironing-board is placed on the step-ladder frame to form the ironing-table, are stretched and looped over pins or hooks m m projecting from the frame A, and thus serve to hold the ironing board securely upon its supports. They are readily slipped off when the ironingboard is to be removed. Similar loops may be attached to the other end of the ironin g-board, if desired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The step-ladder composed of two frames, A B, one bearing the landing-step and the other bearing the flight of steps, the two being pivoted together near the center ofeach, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
2. The combination of the step-ladder, constructed with the two swinging frames A B, and provided with the notched brace D and the ironing-board E, constructed as described, together forming an ironing-table, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
3. The combination of the elastic loops 1 l on the ironing-board.E and the hooks or pins on m on the step-ladder, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
Specification signed by me this 20th day'of September, 187 3.
HILAND H. KENDRICK.
