Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 13, 1916. Serial No. 109,004.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that T, JOHN F. OQoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a. certain new and useful Improvement in Railway Draft-Riggings, Qf which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n railway draft riggings. One object of the inventlon is to provide a simple arrangement for detachably connecting a draw bar and friction shell by means of a short yoke to thereby facilitate assembling, disassembling, repalr pf the parts, and to minimize cost of material.
Another and more specific ob ect of the invention is to provide a short two-part yoke connection between a friction shell and draw bar, which yoke shall be detachably connected both with the draw bar and the shell. in the drawing forming a part of th s specification, Figure 1 is a horlzontal, longitudinal section of a draft r1gg1ng show1ng my improvements embodied t l1ere1n. Fig. 2 is a transverse, vertical sectional View of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1 and taken on the line 2-2 thereof. Fig. 3 1s a side elevation of one of the yoke members employed with my improvements. Flgs. 4 and 5 are views similar to Figs. 1 and 2 respectively, but illustrating another embodlment of my invention, Fig. 5 belng taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4:. Fig. 6 is a transverse, vertical sectional view taken on the line 66 of Fig. 4:. And Fig. 7 is a detail, horizontal section of the front end of one of the yoke mebers employed in the construction illustrated in Fig. 4.
Referring now to the construction illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, 1010 denote channel center sills or draft members, to the inner faces of which are secured rear stops 11 and front stops 12, the latter being slotted as indicated at 13 in alinement with corresponding slots 14 in the sills, to accommodate the movements of the key 15, which connects the yoke (hereinafter described) and the draw bar 16. 17 denotes a combined friction cylinder and spring cage of the well known Minertype, having a cylindrical friction shell proper 18 at its front end, the
t6 latter being provided with a circumferential collar 19 forming a shoulder for the purpose hereinafter described. Cooperable with the friction shell are friction shoes 20 and wedge 21, the latter engaging a front follower 22. The parts are held in operative position by means of a saddle plate 23 detachably connected to the lower flanges of the sills as by short bolts 24 and nut lock clips 25.
For connecting the draw bar andfriction shell, I have provided a novel short twopart yoke consisting of two similar members A, A. Each member A is provided with an upper arm 26, lower arm 27, front side connecting plate 28 slotted as indicated at 29 to accommodate the coupler key, and a rear semi-circular connecting portion 30. At their rear ends, each member A is provided with upper and lower oflset flanges 31, each of said flanges having a circular lug or boss 32, the latter forming with a spaced, curved wall 33 of the adjacent portion of the yoke member, a groove or channel to receive the corresponding circular boss or lug 32 of the other member A. By means of the structure above described, a detachable hinge joint is provided between the yoke members A, A, the parts being assembled by first placing the members A, A substantially end to end and then swinging them -toward each other to the parallel position shown in Fig. 1. When thus assembled and prevented from lateral separation, the yoke members A, A are inter-locked as will be understood. The diameter of the semi-circular portions 30.30 of the yoke members is made such that they will fit the cylinder proper 18 and thus engage behind the collar19, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
Upon pulling movement, the coupler key will engage the forward ends of the slots 29 and pull the yoke forwardly. The latter in turn will pull the combined friction cylinder and spring cage forwardly, thus actuating the friction mechanism. Under buff, the draw bar moves rearwardly with its key 15 and the yoke and friction cylinder and spring cage remain stationary, the slots 29 being sufficiently elongated to permit this movement of the coupler key without moving the yoke.
In the modifications illustrated in Figs. 4 to 7, the sills, stops, combined friction shell and spring cage, friction mechanism, front follower, and draw bar are the same Patented June a, rat a.
as those illustrated in the other views. The Mm the members B, B is provided with upper fected by a different type of short two-part yoke, the same comprising two similar members B, B. Each of said members B .consists of an, upper arm 126, lower arm 127, front side connecting plate 128, and rear semi-circular connecting portion 130, the latter fitting the friction cylinder proper and engaging behind the collar formed on the front portion thereof. At their front ends, the yoke members B, B are provided with detachable, interlocking hinge joints similar to those formed on the rear ends of the members A, A, and in addition, each of and'lower shoulders or gibs 4()40 which engage the usual upper and lower shoulders 41 formed on the draw bar. It is believed the manner of assembling the construction shown in Figs. d to 7 will be understood without further explanation from the detailed description given of the structure illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3. In the modification'just described, it is apparent that the connection may be made to a draw bar which is not provided with a coupler key slot, thereby eliminating the necessity for a coupler key and the necessity for slotting the sills.
From the preceding description, it will be. seen that the arrangement which I have provided employs a minimum of metal; it permits of a detachable connection between both the draw bar and the friction cylinder; and on account of the two-part yoke, relative movement between the same is permitted to thereby accommodate the radial movements of the draw bar.
Although I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred manner of carrying out my invention, the same is merely illustrative and I contemplate all changes and modifications that come within the scope ,of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In a draft rigging, the combination with a draw bar and a friction gear including a friction shell, of means for connecting the draw bar and front end of the shell comprising a yoke consisting of two parts interlocked when assembled and having shouldered engagement with the friction shell.
2. In a draft rigging, the combination with a draw bar and a-friction gear including a friction shell, of means for connecting the draw bar and front end of the shell comprising a two-part yoke having a de tachable hinge connection.
3. In a draft rigging, the combination with a draw bar and a friction gear ineluding a friction shell, of means for connecting the draw bar and front end of the shell comprising a two-part yoke having a detachable hinge connection, said yoke and .friction shell having cooperating engaging comprising two members having an interior shoulder at their rear ends, the shell having an angular shoulder at its front end cooperable therewith.
5. In a draft rigging, the combination with'a draw bar and a friction ge ar including a friction shell, of means for connecting the draw bar and front end of the shell comprising two members having an interior shoulder at their rear ends, the shell having an angular shoulder at its front end cooperable therewith, said members being interlocked when in assembled position.
6. In a draft rigging, the combination with a draw bar and a friction gear including a friction shell, of means for connecting the draw bar and front end of the shell comprising two members having an interior shoulder at their rear ends, the shell having an-annular shoulder at its front end cooperable therewith, said members having an interlocking hinge joint.
7. In a draft rigging, the combination with a draw bar and a friction gear including a friction shell, of means for connecting the draw bar and front end of the shell comprising a two-part yoke connected at its rear end to the forward end of the friction shell, said yoke being slidably connected with the draw bar.
8. As an article of manufacture, a short two-part yoke, each of said parts being provided with a semis circular rear end adapted to fit over a corresponding cylindrical member.
9. In a draft rigging, the combination with a draw bar, of a combined friction shell and spring cage, having a friction shell at the forward end thereof, said friction shell being provided with a circumferential shoulder, a two-part yoke connected at its forward end to the draw bar, the rear ends of the parts of said yoke being semi-circular and adapted to fit over the friction shell behind said shoulders, the parts of said yoke being connected by a detachable hinge joint.
