MARYA RUDEK, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
cosrrnon AND LIFTER- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 21,1917. Serial No. 150,256.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARYA RUDEK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors and Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cuspidors and lifters therefor.
One important object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character.
A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved form of cuspidor in combination with an improved form of lifting handle for the cuspidor, the handle being capable of being locked securely in position on the cuspidor, both against rotative movement with respect to the vessel itself and against accidental detachment therefrom.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and specifically claimed.
' In the accompanying drawing, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Figure 1 is a plan view of the detachable handle removed from the cuspidor.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the cuspldor showing the detachable handle or lifter ap-- plied thereto.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on the l1ne 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on the line 7 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3.
In carrying out the objects of this mvention there is, provided a cuspidor having a body portion 10 which is constructed between its top and body to form a groove 11. At one side of this body is a handle 12 and the upper face of the handle adjacent the body 10 is provided with portions which are beveled in opposite directions as indicated at 13.
The handle or lifter consists of a length of spring rod which is bent intermediate its ends as at 14 so that there is formed a pair of arms 15 the forward ends of which are curved as at 16 to fit in the groove 11. Between their ends each of these arms is provided with a corrugated portion 17 and slidable on the portions of the arms adjacent the bend 14 is a locking ring 18 which can be forced toward the bowed portion 16 so as to engage the corrugated portions 17 and thus lock the bowed portion 16 against movement away from each other. At the forward end of each of these bowed portions 16 is an upstanding portion 19 and each upstanding portion terminates in a finger 20 carrying a barbed like hook 21 which, when the lifter is applied to the cuspidor, rides up over a respective beveled portion 13 and locks on the handle as clearly seen in Fig. 4. Now by means of this construction it will be seen that movement of the lifter about the cuspidor is prevented while at the same time if the ring 18 be locked in the corrugations 17 the bowed portion 16 will so embrace the cuspidor as to prevent accidental detachment of the lifter therefrom. Moreover, when the ring is in position the barbed hooks 21 can not be unlocked from the handle but when the ring is slid backward, then the bowed portion 16 relaxes sufficiently to permit enough upward movement of the barbed hooks to free them from the handle so that the lifter may be detached from the cuspidor.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficientdevice of the kind described and for the'purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, 1s
1. The combination with a cuspidor having-a constricted portion intermediate its top and bottom and a handle on one side; of a detachable lifter and handle for the cuspidor comprising a spring rod doubled intermediate its end to provlde a pair of arms arranged to engage the constricted portion of the cuspidor, and fingers on said arms arranged to releasably lock on the handle of the cuspidor.
