Description
I. E. L. SHEARER. COMB. APPLmATIon FILED NOV. 4, 1909.
Patented Mar.1,1910.
To all whom it may concern:
SHEARER, a citizen of the ISADORE E. IJUS'IER SIHII-.AR1ER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
Be it known that I, IsiinoRE E. LUSTER United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs; and I do hereby declarethe foll'owing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others 1ski-lled'in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in combs and the object of my-mvent-ion is to Fig. 2
' pressed inwardly through held by one hand of t produce a comb which shall be sanitary and adapted to easily produce waves in the hair.
lVith this object in View, my invention consists in the construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and claimed. a
In the accompanying drawings-.Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved comb. is'a front view thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 33 of Fig.' 2.. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the'clip adapted to be slipped teeth to confine the hair'in place. Fig. 5 is a side view of the same, and Fig. 6 is a cross section of the same, taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
The comb is made of bone, shell, rubber,
or any desired material.
1 represents the end of the comb, having attached thereto a series terminating in a hook 3. This comb is curved to ht the curve of the head, as indicated in Fig. 1. 3
In Figs. 4 to 6 is shown the clip, whichis adapted to be slipped over and engage the hooked ends of the comb to confine the hair in position thereon. As shown in Fig. 4, this clip is curved so that it is parallel to' .the curve of the main comb. It consists of a back piece 5, slotted as shown at 6, and with a projecting portion 7 thereon, leaving a space 8 between which the hooked ends 3 of the comb are inserted.
In using the comb it is first pressed through the hair with the teeth forward along the temples, for example,-the hair bein loops. Or in,
mg woven upon the comb other. words the teeth of the comb are first the hair, then out-' etc., "the hair being e user as the comb is woven in and out through the hair by the wardly, then inwardl Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed November 4, 1909. Serial No. 526,261.

other hand. As soon as the teeth of the comb are filled with. loops of hair, the clip 5 is placed over the ends 3 of the comb, which ends lock the clip in osition. Thus a double effect is produce .owin to the curves in the comb and the loops of the hair on the teeth. The'curved teeth make along Wave in the hair and the loops make a short wave, the result being a close imitation of the well known Marcel wave.
It is not strictly necessary to use the clip 5, as the curve of the teeth 2 will cause the hair to wave, but to insure the production of a wave quickly, I prefer usually to use the clip.
This comb is absolutely sanitary, is free from any protruding parts which cause the hair to be tangled. The comb produces three distinct waves, and as man combs can be used as desired. For examp e, one comb can be used on each side of the pompadour and one in thecenter, and combs all across the front of the head and sides and at the back are "easily used. It is not necessary to have the combs remain in the length of time,
as commonly twenty to thirty minutes is all that is required. In
hair for any great the use of the comb, no heat is necessary, so
' that the hair is not injured by its use.
These combs are intended to reduce a natural wave in the hair, simu atmg the well known Marcel wave.
Having thus described my invention, I
1. A comb for producing waves in the hair without heat, consisting of an end p1ec e, reversely curvedteeth projecting from said e'ndpiece, said teeth terminating in a hooked portion, and means adapted to slip over the ends of the teeth to secure the hair thereon, substantially as described.
2. A comb, consisting of-an end iece', reversely curved teeth carried there y, each tooth terminating in a hooked end, said comb being curved to conform to the curvature of the head, and a clip adapted to be passed .over the hooks on the ends of the teeth to confine the hair in'position thereon, substantially as described. a
In testimony whereof, I afiix my slgnature, in presence of two witnesses.
