Description

H. HAUPUMN. PENCIL ATTACHMEN FR SECTIONAL RULES. APPLICATION "FILED SEPT-30| X916- ]mefaed May 29, i917;
.- Be it known that I,
HERMAN HAUPTMAN, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
PENCIL ATTACHMENT FOR SECTIONAL RULES.
Application led September 30, 1918. Serial No. 123,03@
To all 'whom t may concern.'
HERMAN HAUPTMAN, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Pittsburgh; county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil Attachments for Sectional Rules, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a pencil attachment for sectional rules,.and has for its object to provide means secured to one of the sections of the rule for connecting a lpencil therewith, said means not impairing in any manner the extending or the folding of the rule.
Further objects of the invention `are to provide a pencil attachment for rules which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, eiicient and convenient in its use, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel con-y struction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described 'and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote ,corresponding parts throughout the several views:-
Figure "1 is an elevation of a sectional rule showing the adaptation therewith of a pencil attachment in accordance with this invention and further showing the attachment secured to two of the sections of the rule.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the blank from which the'- attachment is Jformed.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings 1, 2, 3 and 4 denote the sections of` a rule and connected to each of the sections l and 4, which are the outer sections of the rule, is a pencil attachment in accordance with this invention. Each of the sections 1 and 4 is provided with two pairs of longitudinally extending spaced slots and the slots of one pair are indicated at 5 and the Y slots oir' the other pair at 6.
The blank from which the pencil attachment is jtormed consists of a longitudinally extending body 7 formed of a narrow strip:
of metal, and which has projecting laterally, at points intermediate the ends t ereof, two pairs-ofbendable wings, the wings of one pair are indicated at 8 and the wings of the other pair are indicated at 9. 4
Formed integral with the body 7, and spaced from the wings 8 and 9, are two pairs of bendable projections, and the projections of one pair are indicated at 10 and the projections of the other pair at 11. The wings 8, 9 are bent outwardly and "curved to provlde clamps, the clamps formed by the wings 8 are indicated at 12, and the clamps formed by the wings 9 are indicated at 13. The projections 10 and 11 are bent inwardly to provide securing members and the members formed by the projections 10 are indicated at 14 and those formed by the projections 1l are indicated at 15.
`When the attachment is connected with the section of a rule, the projections 10, 11 are passed through the slots 5, 6, of the rule section and then bent upon the inner face of the rule section whereby the attachment is detachably connected with the section, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
The body 7 of the attachment is such as not to interfere with the graduations of the rulesections and the material Jfrom Vwhich the attachment is made is so thin as not to interfere to any great extent with the rule sections .when one or moresections are'connected to the rule.
What I claim is ;--V
A pencil attachment for rules comprising an elongated flat body portion provided near each end with a pair of oppositely disposed projections capable of being bent outwardly to provide clamping means, said body portion further provided at each end with a-pair of laterally projecting oppositely disposed lugs capable of being bent inwardly to extend through a rule for securing said body portion therewith the lugs at the ends of the body portion spaced from the other lugs.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HERMAN HAUPTMAN.
