To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELAM CURE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flagmens sig naling Kits; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple and highly efficient flagmans signaling kit; and to such ends, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
For the purpose of signaling trains under various different conditions, flagmen on railway trains are compelled to carry a flag, torpedoes and one or more fusees. My invention combines all of these signaling devices into a common kit, which, in connection with a suitable case, constitute a self-contained unitary device capable of being carried as a single element with any one of the signaling devices available for use whenever required.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view showing the complete signaling kit;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section on the line 2-r2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view showing in detail the rotary flag staif removed from the case.
The case 4 of the signaling kit may be made in a good many difierent ways, either from metal or wood, but as shown, it is of the latter construction. It is formed with three compartments 5, 6 and 7. The compartment 5 is open at one side and at the bottom of the case and is adapted to contain the signaling flag 8. This signaling flag 8 is detachably secured at its inner edge to a flag staff 9, by means of a screwequipped clamping bar 10. This flag staff 9 is rotatably mounted in the end walls of the compartment 5 and at one outer end, is provided with an operating hand wheel or knob 11, by means of which it may be rotated to wind up the flag on the staff. At its upper edge, the case 4 is provided with a hand piece 12, by means of which it may be carried. Said hand piece 12 also affords convenient means for holding the case and using the latter as a flag support when the flag is uncoiled and used to signal a train.
The compartments 6 and 7 are each long enough to contain two axially alined fusees 18. These fusees, as well known, are of cylindrical form and usually provided with projecting spikes 14:, by means of which they may be stuck either into the ground or into. a tie. These fusees 13 are held within the compartments 5 and 6, preferably by spring yokes 15 that are passed through perforations 16 formed in the par tition between the compartments 5 and 6. These yokes 15 are made of spring metal and their ends are turned together and preferably arranged to bear upon the upper surface of the said partition. The fusees are thus held at their central portions in such manner that one may be thrown out cndwise from its holding compartment and from the holding yoke 15.
The torpedoes 17 are provided with the customary spring prongs 18, and these prongs are projected into the compartments 6 and 7 and sprun over the fusees 13. Any one of the torpedoes can be removed by pulling it directly outward, but preferably, they are removed by sliding the outermost laterally outward and 0d from the outer ends of the fusee to which they are normally applied.
In the above described arrangement it is evident that the fusees directly serve as supports for the torpedoes, and that either a torpedo or a fusee may be readily removed from the case, at will, or the flag used when desired.
What I claim is:
1. A casing for a flagmans kit constructed with a flag containing compartment open at one side thereof and parallel therewith, with laterally spaced longitudinally extended fusee containing compartments separated by a partition having perforations through which spring yokes may be passed to secure fusees in position therein.
2. A flagmans kit comprising a casing having fusee containing compartments separated by a partition, fusees contained in said compartments, and spring yokes passed through perforations in said partition and embracing said fusees and holding the same therein.
3. A flagmans kit comprising a casing In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two wltnesses.
