FLAG-STAFF HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,901, dated December 10, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS C. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cambridge, in the county of Guernsey and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flag-Staffs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to signaling devices of that class which use different-colored flags, and which are used on cars, railroad-locomotives, boats, and vehiclesof any description,. and by station-keepers, telegraph-operators, and watchmen.

The object of the invention is to provide a case that will keep the flags separated and which will form part of the staff, the flags being contained in separate pockets "or apartments formed in the case.

The improvement consists of the novel features which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line X X of Fig. 1, showin the signal displayed by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the case, the cap being removed. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the flag-staff and holder. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the cap.

The case A, which may be of any required size and dimensions, has a series of longitudina] pockets or apartments B, the number corresponding with the number of flags to be housed, which extend through one end of the case and have slots 1) extending through the sides thereof. Each pocket or apartment is provided with a holder 0, that has a socket at its upper end, and which isprovided with Serial No. 307,046. (No model.)

whereby the staif and flag can move freely in and out of the pocket. The lower end of the staff is reduced to enter the socket in the holder. When the staff is projected and the flag displayed, it is held by the stem (1, resting in the notch c, projecting from the side of the slot Z) near the upper end of the case.

The cap F, fitted on the end of the case, has an opening f, which is adapted to register with the pockets, and through which the flagstatf is projected.- The pivoted cover 11 is adapted to protect the opening f and shed rain and snow, and'the notch h in the edge of the cover is adapted to receive the flagstaff and hold it from dropping from the case,

the flag-staff being grooved at I to fit in the said notch h. Where the signal is designed to be permanently attached to the pilot of an engine or other support, it will be provided with a base J, which is screwed on the case A, and which is fastened to the said support.

Having thus described my invention, whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. The herein-described signal device comprising the case having a series of separate and independent pockets formed longitudinally therein, each pocket having a slot in its side and a lateral notch communicating with the said slot, and the series of flag-staffs having flags inserted in said pockets and having stems to Work in said slots and rest in the lateral notches, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. In a signal-case having a longitudinal pocket and a slot in its side communicating with the pocket, the combination of the holder placed in the pocket and having a stem to work in the said slot, and the flag-staffinserted in the said pocket and adjustable therein with the holder, substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. The combination, with the signal-case having a series of pockets, of the rotatable cap having a single opening that is adapted to be brought in register with either of said pockets, substantially as and for the purpose described.
