Description

J. A. PAULLIN DETONATIN'G RAILROAD TRACK SIGNAL. No. 269,955. Patented Jan. 2, 1883,
j -UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH A. PAULLIN, OF MEXICO, MISSOURl.
DE'l O NATING RAILROAD-TRACK SIGNAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 110,269,955, dated January 2, 1883.
Application filed July 11, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. PAULLIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residin g at Mexico, in the county of Audrain and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements" in Detonating Ra lroad- Track Signals; "-tnd I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andjexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a partof this specification.
My in vention relates to d'etonating railroadsignals; and it consists in certain features hereinafter described, and specifically setforth in the claims.
Figure 1 is an enlarged view of the devices for setting the signal uponthe rail. Fig. 2 is a perspective of my entire device. v
Like letters refer to like parts in both figures.
A represents a portion of the rail, and B represents the base-piece of my device, which is adapted by the hook I) to be secured beneath the rail and upon one cans flanges, as shown.
To the base-pieces at b is secured pivotally an arm, 0, slotted at c to pass over a staple,
c. secured tothe base-piece,whereby by means of the padlock D the arm may be secured in a closed position, so that the entire device is secured to the rail permanently in such manner that it cannot be removed by unauthorized persons, the hook b and armG servingto firmly clamp the flanges of the rail, as shown.
The step or projection c is provided on thearms 0 in order that the cap E shall not bear upon the flange of the rail when the arm is closed with sufficient force to explode or injure the same.
The. cap E is placed upon or suitably secured to a plunger, F, which works within the outer hollow end, G, of the arm, and when closed the plunger projects sufficiently above the tread of the rail to be depressedby wheels running upon the rail.
The base-piece B is extended and bent at right angles to form a standard, B, to which is secured by straps d a sign or tlag, H, of suitable design or coloring, which may be the same on both sides; or it may, if desired, differ in design upon each side.
To the top of the standard B is secured any ordinary signal-lantern, [,which is adapted to fore the train explodes the cap.
Having described my invention and its op} eration, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination of the base-piece B, provided with the hook I) and staple c, with the pivotallyattached arm, slotted for the reception of the staple, and provided \vitha plunger, F, to explode a cap, substantially as shown and described.
2. The base-piece B, provided with the hook I), the swinging arm 0, adapted to carry a plunger and to be secured to the rail, and extended to form a standard, b,'adapted to receive and support a signal-lantern, I, and flag H, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with the rail A, of the hooked base-piece, the pivotally-attached arm 0, slottedat c and provided with the step 0 and with the hollow end G and the plunger F,
substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
, JOSEPH A. PAULLIN. Witnesses:
, RICHARD W. GIER,
PATRICK F. BROPHY.
