ALEXANDER F. B. ROCKE, AND WlLLIAMI-I. MCLEOD, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent-No. 94,652, dated September 7, 1869.
IMPROVED RAILWAY-SIGNAL.
The. Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALEXANDER F. B. Rooms and WILLIAM H. McLEon, both of Jersey City, county of Hudson, and State of New J ersey, have invented a. new and useful I mpro'vement in Railroad-Signals for Locomotives; and do'herehy declare that the followingis a general description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying,drawings, making part of this specification, of which- Figure 1 is a plan. or top view;
Figure 2, a side elevation; and
Figures 3 and 4, endelevations of our invention.
This invention relates to anovel device for displaying preconcerted signals, for apprising engine-drivers on other trains, and all other persons concerned, of the passage or progress of the train which operates the signals, when the locomotive and train are entering or leaving a tunnel, approaching a drawbridge, passing on a curve, or at any other desired point on the road, where danger may be apprehended, and avoided by means of signals; and
it consists of two or more semi-elliptical springs, placed beside the rail, and at any desired distance apart, and in such manner that the wheels of the 10- comotive in'travelling on the rail shall bear on the first elliptical spring, which is connected with the signal by means of levers, and will display the signal from a. post, warning all concerned that the track is occupied by the locomotive and train of cars, and will, in like manner, by passing over a similar spring and.
mechanism, placed at a remote distance from the other, drop the signal, intimating thereby that the locomotiiie and train had passed; and.
It further consists in a portable bulk-head, attached at any desired point on the road to a. lever, to a post, or to one of the rails, in such manner that, by means of an arm, connected with the steam-whistle of the engine, said arm will strike the bulk-head, and sound an alarm on approaching danger.
In the accompanying drawings- A A indicate the railroad-rails;
B B, 866., the ties or sleepers; and
O C, elongawd ties, which supptrt the mechanism for operating the signals.
This mechanism consists, in the first place, of two semi-elliptical springs I) E, which may be placed a which is held thus by means of the weighted balancearm K, that holds the horizontal rod I into a notch, k, in the weighted vertical arm Q, until the locomotive reaches the other elliptic spring 1), whereby the lever G is vibrated, and consequently the rod I is .withdrawn from the notch'k, thus allowing the signal 0 to fall and withdraw from view.
Furthermore, the lever B carries a vertical post, S,
' to act as a stop, against which a rod, connected with the whistle of the locomotive, comes in contact, and bynieans of which an alarm is sounded on approaching danger.
For the stop S, an arm T, attached to the post 1,
.as shown in red lines, may be substituted, or a port-able stop, as shown in red lines, at \V- attached to the ra-il by clamping-screws.
In this lattercase, the stop may be placed inside of the rails, and the rod V, connected with the steamwhistle, brought down between the wheels of the locomot-ivc and near to the fire-box, so as to strike the portable stop\V, as a modification of our-invention,
if preferred.
Having described ourfim'cntion, What we claim, and desire to secure by Letterslatenr, rs-- The semi-elliptical springs D E, levers G R, rods I L, arms K R, and stop S, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes described and set forth.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto set our signatures, this 11th day of May,A. D. 1869.
