WALTER H. STRAW, OF BRIDGEPOBT, CONNECTICUT.
SMOKING-PIPE. I
- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1917.
Application filed October 13,1915. Serial No. 55,726.
7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER H. STRAW, a
citizen of the United States, residing at' Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking- Fipes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to smoking pipes and rfnore particularly to a sectional bowl there- The primary object of my invention resides in the provision of an improved pipe having a bowl composed of two complemental sections provided with means therein for receiving a packing material to prevent leakage and also novel means associated with the ends of the sections for clamping the sections in position.
Another object of my invention resides in the provision of a novel means for removable association between the sections for retaining nicotin therein.
A still further object of sides in the provision of my invention rea device of the character described that is simple in con struction, eflicient in operation and one that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a minimum cost.
Other objects as well as the nature, char- I acteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the two sections of the bowl spaced from each other, the bowl portions proper thereof being shown in section to illustrate the arrangement of the grooves for receiving the packing material;
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the cap for holding the outer ends of the bowl sections together;
' Fig. 4 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the cylindrical frame for supporting the absorbent material for retaining the nicotin; and
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the cap for gether.
longitudinal recesses I Referring more particularly to the draw- 1ng s in which similar reference numerals designate like or corresponding parts throughout the difi'erent views, I provide a pipe'includinga bowl composed of two complemental bowl sections 1. These two sections are each provided on their inner surfaces wlth arcuate recesses 2 which, when the sections are arranged in abutting relation, form atobacco receiving chamber. These recesses terminate at their lower ends in longitudinal grooves 3 which form the smoke chamber, the latter extending at substantially right angles from the bottom of the tobacco chamber. These grooves are enlarged intermediate their ends to provide 4, each having curved bottoms to form a substantial cylindrical chamber for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The sections are further provided on their inner surfaces adjacent their inner and outer edges with a straight groove 5 merging with a curved groove 6 which, when the sections are together form chambers which are adapted to receive suitable packing material 6 to prevent leakage when the sections are secured together.
In order to removably hold the two sections in position, I have provided an enlarged circular cap 7 for engagement with the upper or outer edge of the bowl proper. This cap has an annular flange 8 extending from the upper edge thereof which rests upon the upper edge of the sections, the opening 9 provided between the ed es of the flange permitting the placing o tobacco within the tobacco chamber formed when the outer end of which is removably arranged 100 within a threaded recess 13 provided between the sections and communicating with the smoke chamber provided by the grooves 3. The opposite threaded end of the connecting screw is engaged in the correspond- 105 lngly formed recess 14 in a stem 15, the smoke chamber 16 which extends longitudinally through the stem from the mouth iece 17 to the recess is arranged in 9.11m-
ment with the opening inthe threaded (3011- 'necting piece which is in turn 1 arranged in alinement with the smoke chamcan easily be seen incidentally ber formed by the recesses 3 in the bowl sections.
a For the purpose of retaining nicotin in the bowl sections and preventing it from entering the mouth of the user of the pipe, I have provided preferably a closed cylindrical perforated frame 18 havin a cover 19 preferably of absorbent materia arranged in close relationthereabout. Thisnicotin retaining device isremovably arranged inthe cylindrical chamber formed by the recesses 4 in the bowl sections and is illustrated to advantage in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings.
The operation of my invention is as follows: When the pipe is assembled as described and as shown in Fig. 1, tobacco is placed within the tobacco receiving chamber formed by the recesses 2 and lighted, the smoke that is drawn through the smoke chambers in the bowl sections is purified or rather the nicotin is removed from the smoke, whence it passes through the opening in the connecting piece and the smoke chamber 16 in the stem into the mouth of the user. In cleaning the pipe the caps 7 and 10 may be removed after the stem has been removed which permits of the sections 1 being taken apart so that they can be cleaned to permit of theremoval of the nicotin retaining device. A new one ofothese devices may be replaced when the sections are clamped into position. Also the packing 6 within the grooves 5 prevents leakage of smoke or nicotin from the bowl when. it is assembled. I
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it that I have provided a device that is simple in construction, containing a few simple parts that can be cheaply manufactured and assembled and It will be understood that the above de- I scription and accompanying drawings com prehend only the preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in detail of construction, proportion and arrangement of the parts -may be made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1 1. In a pipe, the combination with the tapered complemental stem sections having semi-circular threaded recesses communicating with smoke channels, of a tapered ferrule adapted to engage the tapered ends of the stem. sections when closed, a threaded nipple adapted to be screwed into the screw recesses and projected beyond the ferrule, and a mouth piece adapted to be screwed on the said projecting ends into engagement with the ferrule to cause a clamping of the complemental pipe sections together.
2. In a pipe, the combination with the complemental stem sections having av chamber communicating with smoke channels at each end, of an absorbent cartridge comprising a rigid body portionhaving an absorbent covering, said cartridge being adapted to rest in the chamber, a mouth piece for the pipe, andmeans actuated by the mouth piece for clamping the complemental pipe sections together and securing the absorbent cartridge in position, said cartridge thereby forming a packing and a smoke filter.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signa ture in presence of two witnesses.
