LEANDER M. MAYNE, OF QOLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA.
ROLLER FOR SLIDING DRAWERS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May 15, 1917.
Application filed May 16, 1916. Serial No. 97,827.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEANDER M. MAYNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbia, in the county of Richland and fntate of South Carolina, have invented certain useful Improvements in Rollers for Sliding Drawers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in rollers for sliding drawers, one object of the invention being the provision of a roller carryingattachment for the rear end of a drawer which is easily put .in position, and by means of which movement may be imparted to the roller for engaging and releasing the samefrom a guiding rail or track.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a. device of this character in which the roller carrying member is slidably mounted in the supporting member and is provided with cooperating means for proriding such sliding movement and at the same time holding the caster support or frame in either retracted or projected position.
A still further object of this invention; is the provision of a device of this character which is simple, durable and inexpensive in construction and thoroughly efficient and practical in use.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a rear view of one corner of a drawer with the present device attached, the track being shown with the roller in position thereon, dotted lines illustrating the position the parts assume when disengaged from the track.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the complete device per se.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the numerals 5 and 6 designate respectively, the drawer and track which may be of any desired construction, the track being attached to the supporting furniture.
The present device includes a fixed supporting plate or casing 7 which is attached by means of screws 8 to the drawer 5, the same being provided with the elongated slot 9 and having the toothed flange 10 on one edge thereof.
Mounted for sliding movement upon the outer side of the supporting plate 7 is a plate 11 which in turn has journaled in a circular opening therein the rotatable shank 12 which extends through the slot 9 and has connected thereto a mutilated gear 13, the
teeth of which are disposed to engage the rack teeth 10.
The gear 13 is so constructed that when the rotatable shank 12 is rotated, the same will be rotated therewith, and through the engagement of the teeth 10 will impart reciprocating movement to the plate 11, such rotatable shank being projected through an enlongated opening provided in the back of the drawer 5 and through the supporting washer 15, so that the thumb nut 15, which is held against rotation relative to the shank but is longitudinally.slidable on the shank, may be manipulated to impart rotation to such member while the thumb nut 16 is threaded on said shank and serves to lock the member in either position when necessary.
Formed integral with the plate 11 is the rearwardly extending lug 17 which has journaled thereto the caster or roller 18 which is adapted to be moved into and out of the track 6 as the support 11 is reciprocated.
From the foregoing description, it is evident that after the present device is once installed, the roller-18 may be readily moved into and out of engagement with the track 6 by the simple manipulation of the rotatable stem 12.
The caster or roller 18 where desired, may be mounted upon antifrictional bearings, either roller or ball bearings, or a plane bearing, and such rollers may bemade of metal or fiber as may be found most desirable.
What I claim as new is h In a device of the character described an attaching plate having an elongated opening therethrough, and having two inturned flanges, one ofsaid flanges being provided with rack teeth, a sliding plate mounted upon the first plate between the flanges thereof, a roller cari'iedby the sliding plate,
a rotatable shank carried by the sliding plate and projecting through the elongated slot of the attaching plate, and a gear fast to said shank and engaging the rack teeth, whereby the rotation of the shank imparts sliding movement to the sliding plate.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
LEANDER M. MAYNE.
