Be it known that I, ENOS B. JOHNSON, of Milwaukce, in the county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a. new and useful Improvement` in Drawers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

Figure 1 is avertical longitudinal section of a drawer, to which my improvement is attached.

' Figure 2 is an under-side view of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

My invention has for its object to improve the con' struction of bureau-drawers, stand-drawers, and tabledrawers, so that they cannot bind or stick when being drawn out or pushed in; and

It consists in the combination ,of the shaft, pinionwheels, and toothed racks, with the drawer and frame, or body of the article iu which the drawer is placed, as hereinafter' more fully described.

A represents the body or frame of the bureau, stand, table, desk, or other article in which the drawer is placed.. y

B is the drawer, which is constructed and slides in and out of its place in the frame A in 'the ordinary manner.

-forthi C is a shaft, the journals of which revolve in bearings in the frame A, and to which are rigidly att-ached twosmall pinion or gear-wheels, D, so that theymay always move together. A E are toothed racks, which are attached to the bottom of the 'drawer B, at or near its side edges, 'as

shown in iig. 2, and into the teeth of which mesh the teeth of the gear-wheels D.

By this construction and arrangement, as the drawer is drawn out or pushed in, the racks E, wheels D, and shaft C, compel it to move in a straight line, so that it will be impossible for it to stick or bind while being pushed in or drawn out, s'o that the annoyance so frequently experienced from this cause will be entirely avoided.

Having thus described my invention,

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the shaft C, gear-wheels D, and

' toothed racks E, with the .drawer B and frame A, as

herein shown and described, and for the purpose vset ENOS B. JOHNSON.
