To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY G. VoIGrrr,
. a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, Hartford county, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Concealed Transom-Operators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in transom operating devices, the object being to provide a very simple yet eflicient device for that purpose, so arranged that everything but the perating shaft or handle may be concealed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of part of a door casing showing an overhead transom with my operating device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a relatively enlarged end view of the operating mechanism with the cover plates removed. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section of the same parts with the cover plates in place, certain of said parts being in elevation.
1 represents a transom mounted in the usual casing 2. The transom in this instance is pivoted at its lower edge so that its upper edge will swing. Only one of the pivots is shown herein, the same being indicated at 3. This pivot 23, in its present form, constitutes a shaft or transom carrier, which is so connected with the transom that when said shaft is turned, the transom turns with it.
4c represents a bearing for the shaft 3. This bearing, in the present instance, is formed in the base of a suitable housing 5 which may be secured by the ordinary wood screws to the inner or hidden side of the door casing.
6 a crank arm fixed on the end of the shaft 4 and having a slot 7 substantially radial to the axis of said transom carrier and in which a pin 8 stands. The pin 8 is carried by a rod 9 which passes through a suitable opening in the lower edge of the housing 5 and is suitably guided therein for longitudinal movement, it being preferred to employ guide rollers 10-10 to save wear on the rod. 1
11 is a slot formed in the casing 5 or in a rigid part thereof, such as a plate 12. This slot 11 is out of line with the pivot 3 and hence stands obliquely to the slot 7 The pin Specification of Letters Patent.

8 not only projects into the slot 7, but also projects into the slot 11.
From the foregoing it will be seen that as the rod 9 moves longitudinally, the pin 8 is guided by the walls of the slot 11 and likewise moves in the slot 7 of the crank arm 6 and imparts a positive swinging movement to the latter and thereby swings the transom l to the desired position.
14 is a slot in the side of the housing 5 to afford clearance for the end of the lever arm 6 as it swings upwardly from the position indicated in Fig. 2.
Any suitable means maybe employed for operating the rod 9, but in the preferred form, I use a worm-controlled rack and pinion motion in which the rack 15 is formed on the lower part of the rod 9 and meshes with a pinion 16 carried by a worm gear 17 with which meshes a worm 18 on shaft 19. The end of the shaft 19 is exposed so that a crank 20 may be attached thereto whereby the shaft 19 may be manually turned to move the rod 9.
21 is a suitable housing or frame for the worm gear parts and 22 is an anti-friction bearing for holding the rod 9 so that the rack 15 will mesh properly with the pinion 16 at all times.
In operation it is merely necessary to grasp and turn the crank 20 so as to impart the aforesaid longitudinal movement to the rod 9, which in turn imparts the swinging movement to the transom 1 in the manner aforesaid.
What I claim is:
In a concealed transom operator, a pivoted transom carrier, a crank arm connected thereto, said arm having a slot substantially radial to the axis of said transom carrier, a slotted guide, the slot of which stands oblique to the slot in the crank arm and is out of line with said axis, a pin standing in both of said slots, with means to move said pin to and fro in said slots to positively swing said crank arm on its axis and to thereby operate said transom carrier and transom.
