T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that CHRISTIAN KECK, a citizen of the United States, `anda resident of Crescent Springs, Kenton county, State of Kentucky, have invented a certain new and nseful Mechanical Movement; and I do declare the following `to be `a clear, full, and exact description of the invention, attention being called to the drawing which accompanies this application and forms a part thereof.
This invention relates to mechanism for producing a compound movement of the movable or working member of the mechanism, the movement consisting of rotary and linear motions, which are both reciprocatory and proceed simultaneously.
1n its practical application the mechanisn'i may be utilized to operate for instance the dolly-shaft of a washing-machine when it is desirable 4to rota-te said shaft alternately7 in opposite directions, as well as to reciprocate it simultaneously in the direction of its axis.
The invention consists of the construction as hereinafter described and Vclaimed and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, shows my device in side-elevation and with its parts in one of their extreme positions. Fig. 2, shows the same in a similar view with its parts in their other cxtreme position and in connection with modified means used for operation. Fig. 3, is a top-view of the device, parts being removed on a horizontal section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Closely fitted between the two v.there is a slide 16, substantially diskshaped and provided with a notched extension 17, fitted to engage a guide 1S provided on the standard. it is held in place between pinion and shoulder by the shaft which occupies a perforation in the same, the engagement being however of a nature which' does not interfere with the rotation of the shaft and with the parts connected thereto, viz. pinion 14 and collar 15.

A rack 24 is provided on arm 2O on one side of the slot therein and arranged to mesh into pinion 14. It will now be seen that if arm 2O is oscillated, shaft 7 will be raised and lowered alternately by reason of the operative connection between both, effected by means of slide 16, held on said shaft by pinion 14 and collar 15 and in engagement with slotted arm 20 by means of pin 19. The position of this latter within the slot of the arm is maintained by reason of the notched extension 17, on slide 16 and in engagement with gnide 18. At the same time rack 2/1, while passing back and forth across the face of pinion 14, which is rigidly connected to the shaft, eii'ccts the reciprocatory rotation of this latter. To reduce the friction it is preferable to cover pin i9 with a roller-sleeve. ln case of use in connection with a washing-machine, an effectual operation is obtained whereby the clothes to be washed are alternately moved in the tub back and forth in two directions.
Connection for motordrive may be readily made as shown in Fig. 2, by means of links 25 and 26, suitably arranged and whereby the reciprocatory member 27 of the motor is connected to arm 20 by means of screw 23. The handle may be detached in that case if desirable and the screw replaced, to `serve for attachment of one of the links. According to extent of rotation of the shaft, the pinion may be normal, or a mu- .tilated one.
Having described my invention, I claim as'neiv':
l. In a mechanical movement, the combination of a shaft, bearings to which it is iitted for rotary as well as for linear movement, a pinion rigidly mounted on it, and means to alternately rotate this pinion in opposite directions and to simultaneously move the same and the connected shaft back and forth iii axial directions.
2. In a mechanical movement, the combination of a shaft, bearings to which it is fitted for rotary as Well as for linear movement, an actuating device and complementary means` in part on said device and on said shaft and whereby both are operatively connected to each other and in a manner that manipulation of the actuating device causes interaction of the complementary moans so as to reciprocate the shaft simul-V taneously iii axial, as Well as in rotary direction.
3. In a mechanical movement, the combination of a shaft, bearings to which it is fitted for rotary as Well as for linear movement, a pinion rigidly mounted on it, and operating means comprising a rack vWhich is in mesh with this pinion and which serve i'vhich is inV constant engagement withv the pinion. 1
5. In a mechanical .,movement, the combination of a shaft; bearings to Which itis fitted for rotary as Well as for linearmovenient, a pinion rigidly mounted on it, an oscillating' arm provided VWith a rack Which meshes with the pinion, a coimecting member moving with theshaft whereby this latter is connected to the arm to be. moved thereby reciprocally in-axial direction and means to Ahold this connecting member to Va movement which is parallel to the movement of the shaft.
