H. W. PEIRGE. TRANSOM LIFTER.
Patented Oct. 12, 1897.
\AAT'YJEEEIEE;
UNITED. STA
PAT NT OFF C HERBERT W. PEIROE, 0F WALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
TRANSOM-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,569, dated October 12, 1897. Application filed May25, 1897. Seria1No.638,023. (m tter) To 00 whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that L'HERBERT W. PEIROE, of Waltham, in the county of- Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Transom-Lifts; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to improvements for-devices whereby transoms or window-sash may be operated, the improved device being particularly adapted for operating the transoms in greenhouses.
The object of the invention is to so construct a lifting mechanism of this nature that a positive action may be maintained to open or close the sash, while the mechanism is yieldingly supported.
Another object of the invention is to improve the construction of the bracket in which the horizontal motion is transmitted in a vertical direction.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the bracket and in the mounting therefor.
The invention also consists in such other novel features of construction and combination of parts as shall hereinafter be more fully described, and pointed. out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the transom-lift, Showing its relation to the transom or window. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged View of the bracket With its" pinion, the bearings for supporting the bracket being Shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 represents a rear view of portions of the bracket, showing the filling piece for the bracket-sleeves and the means ing-piece 14 fit within the circular sleeves 9 9, and the arm 15 thereon engages with the stud 12 and is secured by means of the nut 13.
- gage the same.
The bracket is supported in place by means of the fixtures 16 16, each having a bearing 17, in which one of the sleeves 9 9 is journaled, these fixtures being Secured to a stationary portion below the transom. Thus the bracket may swing or yield in these bearings.
The rack 18 is movable through the guides 7 and 8, being engaged with the pinion 11. At its upper end it is-pivot-ed to the fitting 19, which is secured to a free portion of the transom, so that when the pinion 11 is rotated it will cause the vertical movement of the rack and the opening or closing of the transom, depending on the direction in which the pinion is rotated.
As a means for causing the rotation of the pinion I prefer to use the rack 20, which is reciprocal in the sleeves 9 9 and engages with the pinion 11', the pinion having sufficient face to permit the two racks 18 and 20 to en- One, of these lifting devices being designed for use at each transom of a series, I connect the racks 20 of adjacent devices by means of gas-pipe extensions 21.
The actuating mechanism for each series of transom-lifts comprises a bracket 22, having a horizontal guide for the rack 20, this 25 is rotated, itwill cause the rotation of theworm 2 L, which, acting on the gear 23, will rotate the same and effect the reciprocation of the racks 20 and 20 and their connections 21. This reciprocation of the horizontal racks results in the rotation of the pinions, as 11, of the various lifters, each of which, being in engagement with a rack 18, actuates the same vertically in the predetermined direction and opens or closes the transom or similar closure accordingly.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a transom-lift, the combination with a bracket having horizontal sleeves adapted to be journaled, and vertical guides, of bearings for the sleeves, a pinion rotatably mounted in the bracket, a rack movable through the vertical guides and in engagement with the pinion, and means reciprocal through the bearing-sleeves, for rotating the pinion.
2. The combination with a bracket having the frame 5 furnished with the brace 6, the guides 7 and 8, and the sleeves 9 9, the filling-piece 14E secured as described, and the pinion 11 rotatably mounted in the bracket,
of the vertical rack 18, movable through the IO guides 8 and 9 in engagement with the pinion, the horizontal rack 20 reciprocal in the sleeves 9 9, and means for reciprocating said rack, as described.
