Be it known that I, WILLIAM K. HENRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in door-checks; and the chief object of my improvement is to provide a convenient way for reversing the check for differenthanded doors.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my door-check as applied to a right-handed door. Fig. l is a plan View of the spring-hub and spring, together with a horizontal section of the spring-barrel. Fig. 2 is an enlarged central vertical section of the same on the line m a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of the same with the springbarrel and crank-shaft removed. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of parts of my check on the line y of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a plan view of my check as applied to a left-handed door, and Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view of parts thereof on the line 2 of Fig. 5.
A designates the case or frame for the spring-barrel 6 and operating-shaft "7, the lower part of said case being provided with a bracket 8 for securing the check to the door. The cylinder B may be formed in any ordinary manner and stands at right angles to the operating-shaft. The piston C, Fig. 2, and piston-rod 9 may be of any ordinary construction, and the cylinder is provided with an ordinary vent-valve 10. As shown, the operating-shaft 7 is provided with a crankpin disk 11, having crank-pin 12, which is connected to the pin 13 of the piston 9 by means of the link 14, the inner end of the piston being guided in the groove 15 at the bottom of the case A, all substantially as described and claimed in an applicationfiled by me of even date herewith. sential to my invention, which relates to the means of reversing for application to differcut-handed doors and may be applied to any ordinary door-check without regard to whether itis a pneumatic check or a liquid check.
Within the case A is a hollow spring-hub 16, having a longitudinal slot 17 for the inner end of the spring 18,and.at the lower end a disk 19, whose periphery bears on the inner wall of the case A, as shown in Fig. 2. The ,operatingshaft 7 is fitted to the interior bore of the hollow spring-hub 16. The springbarrel 6 is provided with a solidouter end, which forms a cap for the upper end of the case A, While the cylindrical portion of the s pring-barrel is fitted within the case A. Said spring-barrel is provided with a slot 20, Fig. 1, to receive the hooked outer end of the spring. The slots in the spring-hub and spring-barrel and hooked ends of the springs are of an ordinary construction, and any other known manner of connecting the outer and inner ends of the spring to said parts may be substituted therefor. The case A is provided at one side with two perforations 21 and 22, Fig. 2, to receive a screw, as at 23, and the spring-barrel 6 and disk 19 of the spring-hub are provided with one or more threaded holes in the respective planes of the perforations 21 and 22.
The outer end of the operating-shaft has the crank-arm 24 fitted to it in-any ordinary manner, so that said shaft and arm rotate together as one piece. The outer end of the crank-arm 24 is connected by means of the longitudinally-adjustable arm or link 25 to the bracket 26 on the casing or jam above the door. Said crank-arm 24 is perforated near its hub to receive the screw 27, which passes through said perforation into a hole in the coupling-plate 28, Fig. 4, for a righthancled door or one of the holes 29 in the upper end of the spring-barrel for a left-handed door.
The coupling-plate lies immediately under the crank-arm and is perforated to receive the outer end of the operating-shaft. It is also provided with one or more dowel-pins 30, which enter properly-formed sockets 31 in the outer end of the spring-hub, whereby the spring-hub and operating-shaft both move with the crank-arm. The spring-barrel is held against rotation by means of the screw 23, which passes through the perforation 21 in the case A into a threaded hole in the side of the spring-barrel. V
WVhen the door is opened, the pull on the crank-arm Bil turnsthe operating-shaft and spring-hub in the direction indicated by the dart in Fig. 1 and on the spring-hub in Fig. 1, thereby turning the shaft '7 to operate the piston and also the spring-hub to wind up the spring from its inner end while its outer end is prevented by means of the screw 23 from moving within the case, the door being closed by the spring and checked by the cylinder and piston in the ordinary manner of spring-actuated pneumatic or liquid checks.
In order to apply the check to a differenth-anded door, as in Figs. 5 and 6, the bracket 26 and case A are properly secured to the cas in g and door. The coupling-plate 28is wholly removed, and the screw 27 is screwed into one of the holes in the outer end of the springbarrel, as shown in Fig. 6. The screw 23 is removed from the hub of tho crank-shaft and perforation 21 in the case and passed through the perforation 22 into a threaded hole in the disk 19, so as to hold the spring-hub 16 in a fixed position in the case A, while the springbarrel is free to rotate therein. Upon opening the door the crank-arm carries the operating-shaft and spring-barrel in the direction indicated by the dart in Fig. 5 and on the spring-barrel in Fig. 1, thereby winding up the spring and operating the check as before, only the spring is wound from its outer in stead of its inner end. By providing the spring-barrel and disk 19 with several holes to receive the screws 23 and 27 the tension of thespring may be regulated as desired.
From the foregoing it willbe seen that I connect both ends of the spring to a part which may be fixed or stationary with reference to the case, whereby the spring may be wound from either end to reverse the check for different-handed doors.
I do not wish to limit myself to the details of construction shown, even in the manner of connecting and disconnecting the ends of the spring to their respective parts, but reserve the right to make such changes as fall within the province of the mechanic and which may be fairly within the spirit and scope of my improvement. The means for operatively connecting the parts with a door and its casing, and the particular form of checking cylinder, piston, and piston-operating mechanism may be varied at pleasure without departing from my invention, so long as the check is reversed by setting the spring to wind from its opposite end.
I claim as my invention 1. A door-check having an operating-shaft, a case or frame for said shaft, a spring,a springhub and spring-barrel connected to the opposite ends of said spring, and devices for connecting and disconnecting said spring hub and barrel with said operating-shaft and case for winding the spring from its outer or inner end as may be desired, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a cylinder and piston door-checking device, an operating-shaft for the same, a case or frame for supportingsaid shaft, devices for operatively connecting said parts with a door and its casing, a spring, and means for so connecting the spring with movable and fixed parts of the device as to permit it to be wound by the rotation of the shaft either from its outer or inner end accordingly as said device is applied to a right or left hand door, substantially as described.
3. In a door-check the combination of the case A, a hollow spring-hub supported in said case, an operating-shaft within said springhub, a spring and spring-barrel surrounding said shaft, a crank-arm attached to the outer end of said shaft, and coupling devices for securing said crank-arm and shaft to said spring-hub while the spring-barrel is secured to the case, and for securing said barrel to said crank-arm and shaft while said springhub is secured to said case, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
