Description

J. F. HAYEN.
Improvement i'n- Fluting Machines 0 1 2 3 4: 5 inches @iM/WW UNITED STATES PATENT EETGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLUTING-NIACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,607, dated January 9, 1872.
` SPEOIEIGATTON. To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB F. HAYEN, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie, in the State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fluting-Machineg7 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this speciiication.
Figure l is a longitudinal section of the utingroller, showing the means for heating the same and securing it to the handle. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, showing it applied to the iluting-bed. ofthe iluting-roller and handle. Figs. 4 and 5 are, respectively, an end view of the conical luting-roller and an edge view of the flutingbed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawing.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of that class of liuting-machines in which the iluting-cylinder is operated by hand upon a horizontal iluting platform or bed. To this end the invention consists in the method of applying the heating-core to the cylinder and of securing the latter to the frame of the operating-handle, as I will now proceed to describe. K
In the accompanying drawing, A is the hollow iiuting-cylinder, which may be made conical, as shown in Fig. 2', or of uniform diameter, as shown in Fig. 1. One end of this roller is closed and provided with atrunnion, E, and its opposite end receives a anged cover, D,
Fig. 3 is an end view also provided with a trunnion, F. B is the roller-frame, provided with a suitable handle, G, and hung upon the trunnions so that the cylinder may revolve freely. The arm cof theframe, which receives the trunnion of the flanged corner D, is hinged to the main portion B .at the angle thereof, and holds the iianged cover within the end of the cylinder by means of the spring d, as shown in Figs. l and 2. H is the heating-core, iitting with easy contact Within the cylinder and held in place by the flanged cover. When it is desired to remove the heatingcore the arm c is swung outward, carrying the cover with it, thereby opening the end of the cylinder, through which the core is withdrawn. The shoulder 'i upon the cover fits Within the open end of the cylinderwhen the device is in condition for use, and thereby forms a rm support for the same, While the ilange j prevents the cover from being forced Within the cylinder in contact with the core.
I design to employ the cylinder thus constructed in connection with a horizontal uting-platfor1n,K,Which may be made perfectly straight, as shown in Fig. 5, or in the arc of a circle, as shown in Fig.,2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination of the hinged arm c, spring d, and flanged cover D with the handle-frame B and hollow fluting-cylinder A, substantially` as described, for the purposes specified.
JACOB F. HAYEN.
