ROTARY-TOP TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.-
Jl?atented May 8, 1917.
Application led July 11, 1914. Serial No. 850,452.
Be it known that l, l-laLvnR OLsoN'ED- niNosAAs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stoughton, in the county of Dane and State of lllisconsin, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Rotary-Top Tables; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
invention relates to rotary top tables and in particular to rotary top tables adapted for sewing.
The main object of my invention is to provide a device whereby persons sitting at one side of the table and desiring an object in one of the drawers at the opposite side of the table can by simply rotating the table draw saiddrawer within their reach so that they will not have to move from their sitting position.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a sewing' table having a table top rotatably mounted upon a supporting stand in a manner to provide for the ready removal of the table top from its supporting stand to facilitate in the moving of t-he sewing table from place to place.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a device that will contain a maximum amount of drawer space.
A still further object of .my invention is to provide a strong and durable rotary top table having means to provide for a minimum amount of friction.
With these and other objects vin view to be developed as my specification proceeds, I shall proceed to describe my invention in which a preferred embodiment is shown in the drawings, and l wish it understood that l do not desire to be limited to the form or the structure shown, but claim all modifications possible within the scope of the claim appended hereto.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective elevational view of my device in assembled position.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a perspective elevational view with the rotating top member slightly elevated, and
Fig. t is a top view, partly in section,
showing the interior construction of the rotary top member.
ln Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, 1 is the rotating top section and 2 the base section, said base section comprising a lower platform 3 having a central aperture therethrough, approximately vertical standards or legs 5 rising from each corner thereof and supporting said platform 3, the platform being recessed at its corners as at 6 in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings to form recesses to receive the legs.
A plurality of edging members 7 are placed on the outer edge of said support and are retained in normal position by means of corner retainers 3 as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, this edging combining to give a neat and finished appearance to the platform 3 and to form a ledge for retaining objects upon said platform. At the top portion 9 of each of the legs 5 is provided a plurality of retaining members 10, said retaining' members combining to connect each of the legs 5 and to retain them in rigid position. Transversely extending from one retaining member 10 to the opposite retaining member 10 is a beam member 11, said beam member being counter-retained in turn by a cross-beam member 12, said cross-beam running at rightangles to beam 11 and connecting the two oppositely disposed retaining members 10, each of these beams 11 and 12 having a registering aperture 13 therethrough, the purpose of which will be hereinafter set forth. A spindle platform 14 has an integral cylindrically shaped spindle member 15 centrally projecting from the member 11i. The body portion of the spindie member 15 is of a uniform diameter throughout its length and suiiicient to snugly pass through the aperture 13 in the beams 11 and 12 and has a reduced end section 16 to therebyI form a shoulder 17, said reduced section 16 removably projecting through the aperture 4 in the lower platform 3 with the shoulder 17 resting against the upper face of the platform 3. The spindle platform is adapted to rotate in its adjusted position, and to reduce friction during its rotation, an antifrictional device 18 is provided, comprising an apertured base plate 19, seated in a countersink formed in the upper surface of the beam 11 and surrounding the aperture therein, the base plate 19 having a concentric ball-bearing race way in the upper surface of the member 19 suitable to seat anti-frictional ball-bearing members 20. A concentric race way 21 is made in the lower surface of the spindle platform 14, said race way 21 matching the race way in the member 19, and retaining therebetween the ball-bearing members 20.
The rotating top member 1 is connected by screws 22 or other suitable fastening means to the platform 14 and comprises a lower deck 23 and an upper deck 24C, said two decks matching each other in contour and `being -preferably octagonal in shape. The 'deck 2l is spaced from the deck 23 by means of partition supports 25, said partition supports being parallel to and spaced from each other and arranged in pairs and having one pair crossing at right angles to the other pair, thereby forming a plurality of alternating` rectangular and triangular receptacles between the end portions and the points of intersection of said partitions.
Into a portion of these receptacles I mount drawers 2G having a thumb pull 27 thereon for withdrawing the drawers from the receptacle, and to the balance of the receptacles, lparticularly the receptacles that fall at the corners of my device, I connect a door or lid 28, said door or lid being latched by means of a latch device 29. lIhe edges of the members 23 and 24 project beyond the line of the face -of drawers 26 and doors 28 thereby tendingto protectsaid drawers and doors and to give a finished appearance to the device.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that the bearing shoulder 17 not lanti-friction means.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersA Patent, is:
In a rotary top table, the combination with a supporting stand embodying an upper and lower deck, the upper deck being formed centrally with an opening and the lower deck formed centrally with a. reduced opening, of a spindle formed with a reduced lower end to provide a bearing shoulder, said spindle being disposed `through the apertures of the upper and lower deck so that the said bearing shoulder will bear upon theI lower deck, radial arms formed integral with the upper end of said spindle, a multi-chambered top rigid upon said radial arms, and anti-friction means disposed between said arms and said upper deck, said bearing shoulder serving in conjunction with the anti-friction means to support the combined weight of the spindle and top and further serving to reduce the wear upon the anti-friction mea-ns to a minimum. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of twosubscribing witnesses.
