JOSEPH H. ALLEN, EL PASO, TEXAS.
COLLAR ATTACHMENT.

Application filed February 13, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn H. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at El Paso, in the county of El Paso and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Collar Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to collar attachments and more particularly to attachments adapted to be used in connection with folding or turn-down collars.
Most of these collars are provided with a locking flap adapted to hold the parts close together in the front but these locking flaps are ineffective for this purpose in many instances, and when a gap is once formed at the front of the collar in any manner it is seldom restored to normal or closed position unless the wearer adjusts his necktie and draws the parts of the collar together. Furthermore, it is found that to secure any semblance of an effectively closed front collar it is necessary to use an abnormally large looking flap which is difiicult to insert beneath the folds of the collar after the free It is therefore, the object of this invention td provide simple and eflicient means which may be conveniently attached to the collar and which will at all times hold the collar properly closed independent of the action of the necktie or scarf.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a collar with parts broken away and showing in dotted lines the position of the attachment when in operation.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view with parts broken away and showing the device attached thereto and in inactive position.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken through the collar and showing the manner of engagement of the device with the locking flap;
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein I have illustrated an ordinary Specification of Letters Patent.

turn down collar, 1 shows the inner wall of the collar, 2 the inner button hole flap and 3 the outer or locking flap arranged to eX- tend beneath the folds upon the opposite side of the collar when in operative position upon the wearers neck.
The attachment generally indicated at 4 is constructed of a single piece of spring wire of relatively fine gauge and having one terminal formed to provide a penetrating pin 5 which is adapted to be inserted through the fabric of the inner flap 2, as shown, to hold the device attached to said flap and which is curved to conform to the general curvature of the collar. At the inner end of the pin the wire is bent vertically and back upon itself in the form of aloop which produces a shoulder 6 for limiting the inward movement of the pin and also for preventing the pin from turning in the flap. Depending from the loop is a relatively large bowed spring 7 which terminates in a laterally projecting penetrating prong 8 adapted to stick into the inner wall of the flap 3. as will be readily understood. In placing the device in operative position the fore finger is caused to engage the lower end of the bowed spring 7 which is forced upwardly, thus moving the prong 8 toward the shoulder 6. When considerable tension has been placed upon the spring the flap 3 is forced into engagement with the prong 8 which causes said prong to enter the flap 3, while the spring is under tension. This will effectively hold the collar in closed position independent of whether the scarf is drawn taut around the collar or whether the flaps are buttoned together or not.
What is claimed is A device of the kind described composed of a spring wire member, said wire member being shaped to provide a straight shank, said shank being bent back to form a loop extending in the same direction as itself and terminating in a pin formed at an angle upon one side of the loop whereby a shoulder is formed between the shank and pin, said member being also shaped to provide a relatively large bowed spring upon its shank the inner end of which curves laterally beyond said shoulder in the direction of said In testimony whereof I affix my signature pin and its free end curving around the in presence of two Witnesses.
shank on the opposite side of said shoulder and spaced from said shank, said spring JOSEPH ALLEN having a prong formed at its outermost end Witnesses:
disposed substantially in a plane at right MAY LEWELLYN,
angles to the axis of said shank. ZELMA SMITH.
