To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, AUGUST lS. LIND, a citizen of the United States, residing at 2310 Jenny Lind street, McKeesport, State of Pennsylvania, have lnvent-ed a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Polishing Rolling-Mill Rolls, of which improvement the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved apparatus for polishing rolling mill rolls and it comprises a series of removable polishing blocks, held in Contact with said rolls by means of spring-actuated holders, arranged in oblique positions, the one overlapping the other, a means for placing a pressure upon said blocks, and a means of maintaining said pressure: together with the certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the present practice and method of rolling tin plate, and also all sheet metals, it is necessary to close the mill at certain intervals, in order that the rolls may be polished, for reasons well known in the art. This necessitates a considerable delay, resulting in the loss of time, expense, trouble and increased cost of the product.
The object of this invention is to place a permanent polishing apparatus in connection with each set of rolls, that will continuously polish said rolls while the same are in operation, without interfering with the workmen or product of the mill.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of an ordinary set of rolls having arranged inconnection therewith, my improved polishing apparatus, said rolls being those commonly used in the manufacture of tin plate, the polishing apparatus shown is constructed and arranged in accordance with my lnventlon.

Fig. 5 is a plan view of a portion of the holding bar, showing the means for wrenchingV said bar to increase or diminish or relieve the pressure of the polishing blocks upon the rolls.
To put my invention into practice and thereby provide an apparatus for cleaning and polishing rolling mill rolls, said rolls comprising housings 1, and an upper 2 and lower roll 3, constructed and arranged in a manner common in the art, I first provide a strong bar 4, having a square portion 5, and a journal portion 6 at each end` the said square portions adapted to be litted with ratchet wheels 8, and the journals supported in suitable bearings 9, said bearings being attached to the inner side walls of the housings 1. These ratchet wheels 8, are each fitted with a locking pawl 10, to hold the bar 4 stationary at any desired position, and thereby keep a tension upon the same. Attached to the bar 4, at regular intervals are a series of depending spring arms 11, each havingat its free end, a boxshaped holder 12, capable of containing and rigidly holding in an inclined position, a suitable grinding or polishing block 14, said block being formed from a composition containing emery, carborundum, etc. These blocks are molded in form, inserted in the holders and are constantly in contact with the rolls, and are so arranged along the face of said'rolls that the one will overlap the other, and at the same time inclined to the longitudinal axes of the rolls, as will be best seen at Fig. 1, of the drawings. i
Formed with the supporting bar 4, are sockets 15, in which a pinch bar may be placed, as a means of wrenching said bar to bring its connected polishing blocks tightly against the rolls 1 and 2, said blocks being prevented. from backward movement by the ratchets and pawls, above described.

Having thus described my invention, I claim In combination with a rolling mill roll, a rotatable bar arra-ngedvadjacent to and longitudinally of the aXis of said roll, a means comprising a ratchet wheel and locking pawl for holding said bar rigid, a series of spring arms attached to said bar, a holder attached to the free end of each of said 10 arms, a polishing block tted in each of said holders, said blocks arranged with over-lapping ends and inclined, the one with respect to the other.
