Description

POLISHER FOR ROLLS.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 4,1909.

, nates housings for rolls 2 and THOMAS LOMBARDL' OF PORTVUE, PENNSYLVANIA;
POLISHER FOR ROLLS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed January 4, 1909.
Patented May 11, 1909; Serial No. 470,591.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs citizen of the United States of America, residing at Portvue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Polishers for Rolls, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to t is accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a polisher for rolls, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a novel polisher for cleansing rolls used in tin plate mills and similar structures where it is necessary to maintain the rolls in a clean and polished condition to prevent matter from accumulating upon the same, and to insure a high grade product.
Another object of my invention is to provide a simple and self-adjusting polisher for rolls that will not interfere with the pass between two rolls, and can be easily renewed when worn.
' With the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the inven tion is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction combination and arrangement of parts to be presently described and then claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pair of rolls e nipped with my polisher, Fig.2 is a vertica sectional view of the same, Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevation of a portion of one of the polishers, Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view of the same, and Fig. 5 is a cross sectional View of one of the po ishers.
In the accompanying drawin s, 1 desig- 3, die roll 2 be- 1n arranged above the roll 3 and providin a ongitu inal pass 4 for sheet metal. The confronting sides of the housings 1 are provided with oppositely disposed brackets 5- located in front and 6, the brackets 5 being of the rolls 2 and 3, and directly above the ass 4 of said rolls, while the brackets 6 are lbcated at the rear of the rolls, adjacent to the roll 3 and below the pass 4. The brackets 5 and 6 are L-shaped and the horizontal portions of said brackets are adapted to support channel-shaped holders -7, said holders extending longitudinally of the rolls 2 and 3. Each holder is provided with a pluralit of longitudinal openings 8, and in each ho der is placed a longitudinal plate 9, having openings 10, adapted to register with the openings 8. Arranged in able instrument in pmployed to prevent I mounted in engagement with the each holder against the I late 9 are a plurality of polishing blocks 11,
LOMBARDI, at havingbeveled edges 12 for engaging the rolls 2 and 3. The polishing blocks can be of emery or a similar abrasive material. The polishing blocks are made of a size so that they can be conveniently placed in the holder by assing the same through the 0 an 10 and in order that each bloc can be shifted in the holder, the blocks are rovided with eyebolts 13. By inserting a ro or suitthe openin s 8 and 10, and in engagement with the eye polishing blocks can be easil shifted.
Although the polishing b ock's 11 are in spaced relation to each other, it will be observed that the entire surface ofthe rollsmay be readily polished by the blocks b shifting the latter longitudinally in their. ho ders, one block being shifted into the path of another and vice versa.
To normally maintain the polishing blocks 11 in engagement with the rolls, the holders 7 are provided with set screwsl l, adapted to engage the plate 9 as best. shown in Fig. 4.
For retainin the holders in such a posi tion that the b ocks 11 will engage therolls, each of the blocks 5 and 6 are provided with set screws 15 and encircling said set screws between the vertical portions of the brackets and the holders, sion of said s rings forcing the holders toward the rol s. The set screws 15 are the holders from recedmg, and as shown in the drawings, these set screws are adjusted their full limit.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, is
1. In a polisher for rolls, the combination with a support for the rolls to be polished, oppositely disposed brackets carrie by the support and arranged in operative relation with respect to'the rolls to'be polished, channel shaped holders movably mounted upon said brackets, said holders having longitudinal openings formed therein, a plate adjustably mounted in each holder and having openings register-able with the openings of said holder, polishing blocks- *movably periphery of said rolls by said plate of each holder, and means in connection with each bracket for moving said holders toward said rolls to 'hold the polishing blocks in engagement with the periphery thereof, substantially as described.
2. In a polisher for rolls, the combination are coil springs 16, the ten-.
enings 8 olts 13, the
with a, support for the rolls to be goiished, oppositely disposed brackets oarrie by the sup ort and arranged in operative reletion wit respect to the rolls to be polished, chen- -nel-sheped holders movebiy mounted upon 10 said ho1der,end polishing blocks movably ii I 921,549
arranged in each holder and adapted to be held in engagement with the periphery of said rolls by said plate of each holder.
In testimony hereof I eifiix mi 'signeture in the presence of two witnesses.
