To all whom it may concern: I I
Be it knownthat we, Oscan LINDQUIST, a citizen of the United States, and Ammo Pisaucui, a subject of the King of Hungary and Emperor of Austria, both residing at- Vandcrgrift, in the county of \Vestna reland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Polishing Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to apparatus used in connection with rolling inillsin maintaining the surfaces of the reducing rolls of such mills in operative conditiomand the invention more particularly relates to the construction and arrangement of a novel apparatus designed for use for polishing the surfaces of the rolls of hotmills used in rolling sheets and plates. After such rolls have been in use for some time rough spots frequently appear on the suriaces thereof,
which must be removed as formed to prevent the surfaces of materials rolled thereafter being defective. Heretofore, it has been the practice to remove rough spots app'earin, on the surfaces of the rolls during the operation of the mill, by holding a grinding block against the peripheral portions of the roll upon which such rough' spot or spots appear, while the rolls are being rotated. The output of such mills has been very materially increased in recent years and, owing to the added duty of the rolls. it is necessary to repolish or remove rough spots from the rolls with much greater frequency. As the body of the rolls of such mills are crossed, 6., are not true cylinders, and as the contour of these rolls changes at different times in the rolling operations, a single polishing block equal in length to the length of the barrel or body of the roll is not adapted for use with such rolls.
One object of our invention is to provide a roll polishingapparatus adapted for use during the operation of the mill by the use of which the polishing operations are fa- -ilitated. the time required in polishing or restoring the roll surfaces is reduced, and

Another object of our invention is to provide a roll polishing apparatus having novel means whereby the polishing operation is readily effected at. any and all points in the length of the barrel or body portion of the rolls while the rolls are operatively mounted in the roll housings.
A further object of this invention is to provide improved apparatus for polishing rolls having novel means whereby the polishing; block i moved into and out of operative engagement with the roll and is maintained in polishing position as desired or found necessary.
Still further objects of our invention will appear as the invention is more fully disclosed hereinafter and pointed out in the. appended claims.
Referring to the drawings forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a sectional end elevation of a two-high hot mill showing a roll polishing apparatus constructed and arranged and applied for use in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a plan showing the construction of the meansemployed in supporting the polishing block and guitle therefor and for holding the polishing block in operative engagement with the. rolls of the mill; Fig. 3 is a sectional end elevation showing in detail the construction of the polishing block and the holder or guide therefor and the slideway or support in which the polishingblock and guide are movably secured in accordance with this invention. 'Fig. at is a detail plan of the holder for the polishing block shown in Fig. 3.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 2 designates one of the pair of roll housings of a sheet or plate mill which are secured in'spaced apart relation upon the usual housing shoes 3, 3 by meansaof housing bolts at. Mounted in bearings which are positioned in the windows 5 of the roll housings in the usual known manner are the rolls 6 and 7.
The bottom roll 6 is positively driven by an engine or' other prime mover (not shown) in the usual known manner, the wabbler on one neck of the bottom roll 6 being detachably connected by a spindle and coupling boxes to the prime mover. The top roll is rotated by contact with the bottom roll or with metalbeing reduced between the rolls.
Pivotally secured to the inner sides of the roll housings by means of cap-bolts 8 or studs, or equivalent means, are the pairs of swinging arms 9 and 10, 11 and 12. The inner or highest ends of the arms 9 and'lO are rigidly secured to the ends of a guide bar 13 having a dovetail slot 14 therein which extends from end to end thereof. The arms 9 and 10 have slot's l5 .therein which embrace or engage the cap-bolts8 in the side of the housing, forming the pivots for the arms, these slots providing a convenient means for readily removing and replacing the apparatus in operative pos tion. The rear or lowermost end of the arm 9, in which arm the slot 15 is located at a point intermediate its ends, is provided with a handle 16 by which, the arms are swung manually as will be described later.
The swinging arms, 11 and 12, which are on the opposite side of the rolls from that on which the arms 9 and 10 are applied,
have slots 15 by which the arms are held in swinging position on cap-bolts 8 and the inner or highest ends of'these arms are fastened to the ends of a guide bar 13 having a longitudinally extending dovetail slot 14.
The outer or lower end of the arm 11 is bent to form a treadle 17 by means of which the arms 11 and 12 are conveniently rocked in swinging the apparatus into and'out of operative engagement with the lower roll 6.
Secured in the dovetail slot 1% in each guide bar 13 is a slide block 18 which is arranged to move in the slot 14: from end to end of the guide bar so as to traverse the entire length of the barrel or body of the roll 6 or 7 with which it is intended for use.

The advantages of our invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art. The apparatus is simple and'is easily kept in repair. By its use the rolls are maintained in polished condition while still permitting the continued operation of themill, and the necessity of stopping the operation of the mill to remove rough spots from the surfaces 7 of the rolls is avoided andovercome.
Modifications in theconstruction and arrangement of the parts may be made with,- out departing from our invention as defined in the appended claims.
