10 Claims. (Cl. 12S- 11) 'I'his 'invention relates to grinding machines, and more particularly to a grinding wheel truing apparatus for truing the operative face of a grinding wheel.
It is one of the objects of this invention to provide a simplified, thoroughly practicable tru.n ing apparatus for truing the periphery of a grinding wheel to a predetermined form or contour.
Another object of this invention is to provide a self-contained power operated truing apparatus for producing a predetermined form on the operative face of the grinding wheel.
It is another object to provide a truing apparatus which permits the truing of a grinding wheel to the desired form without the necessity of removing the work from its operative posi tion within the grinding machine. Other objects will be apparent from the foregoing speciflcations.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements,
and arrangements of parts as will lbe exemplified in the structure to be hereinafter described, and." the scope of the application of which will be in-- dicated in the following claims.

The truing tool holder I6 also carries at its lower end on its rear face a follower 30 which is arrangedtoengage aforming bar 3 i. As illustrated, in the drawings the forming bar 3| is supported on the frame I0 and is preferably formed as a iiexible steel bar which is arranged so that its curvature may be adjusted to a de ection curve so as to cause a transverse movementI of the diamond or truing tool 21 toward and from the wheel axis as it is traversed transversely of the frame to generate a deflection curve upon the periphery of the grinding wheel. i y
The diamond truing tool holder I6 is provided with rearwardly extending bosses 40 and 4| which engage surfaces 42 and [i3 of the downwardly extending portion i 5 of the slide Il and serve to guide and steady the diamond tool holder i6 as slide il is reciprocated. v
The truing tool slide H may be reciprocated byv any suitable means such as, for example, a power operated mechanism comprising a nut 50 in slide H which is engaged by a screw 5| vrotatably supported in a bearing 52 in the frame- I. The screw 5| is held against endwise movement by means of the bearing 52 on frame Ill and may be rotated by any suitable means such as, for example, a power operated mechanism comprising an electric motor 55 which is provided. with a pulley 56 mounted on a motor shaft 51, and which drives a pulley 58 mounted on the end of feed screw 5l by means of a driving belt 58. The motor 55 is preferably of the reversible type and is arranged so that it may be connected by 'wiring in a conduit 60 to a reversing switch 6i which is controlled by a. manually operable lever 62. The power to operate the motor is supplied from any suitable source through a wire conduit 63. By operating the switch handle 62, the motor may be caused to rotate in either direction to cause the screw 5I to rotate and, through nut,` 50, to move the slide I I carrying the truing tool holder I 6 and truing tool 21 transversely relative to the operative face of a grinding wheel 10.
A yieldable pressure device is provided to hold the truing tool holder I6 with the follower 30 always in operative engagement with the forming bar 3|. 'Ihe pressure device mayV comprise a stud 12 which is threaded into a rearwardly extending boss 13 on diamond or truing toolholder I6. The stud 12 passes through a clearance hole 14 in the portion I5. A spring 15 surrounds the stud 12 and rests in a counterbored aperture 16 in the slide I5 and is interposed between the bottom of the leounterbore and a collar 11 which is held in place on stud 12 by means of a nut 18.'
By adjusting the nut 18 along the stud 12, the tension of the spring v15 may be adjusted to hold the follower 30 in contact withpthe forming bar 3| with the desired pressure.
'I'he forming bar 3| is supported at its opposite end by means of a pair of substantially U-shaped blocks 80 and. 8| which are held in place on the slide I5 by screws 82 and 83 respectively. The center of the forming bar 3| is engaged by a substantially C-shaped head 85 of a bolt.86. The ends 81 and 88 of the C-shap'ed head wrap around and engage the front surface of the forming bar 3|. The bolt 86 passes through a hole 89 in the depending portion of the frame I0 and is provided with a threaded portion 90 at its outer end which is' engaged by a nut 9|. By adjusting the nut 9|, the C-shaped head 85 may be adjusted to flex or release the forming bar 3| so that it assumes the desired concave deflection curve to generate the desired convex curved surface on the periphery of the wheel as the slide I is traversed to carry the diamond or truing tool 21 across the operative face of the wheel 10.
In the lgrinding of large cylindrical objects, such as massive rolls, which frequently Weigh several tons, used in steel rolling mills, it is desirable to provide a truing apparatus which may be positioned on the machine to true the operative face of the grinding wheel to the desired shape or form without the necessity of removing the heavy work piece from the machine. In the preferred construction, the truing apparatus is preferably supported by a substantially U-shaped frame 95 which is arranged to straddle a work piece 98. The U-shaped frame 95 is provided with enlarged supporting pads 91 and 98, 99 and I 00 which serve as a support for the supporting pads IIII and |02 respectively on the ,frame I0. The
frame I0 is bolted in position on pads I 0| and |02 by means of screws |03, |04, |05 and |06 to holdlthe truing apparatus rigidly in position on the U-shaped frame 95. The front end of the U-shaped frame 95 is provided with a work engaging surface I I0 which is arranged to rest upon the periphery of the roll 96 at a point adjacent to the line of .contact between the grinding wheel and work piece. y

Frame I|9 may be clamped in adjusted position on the swivel table |26 by means of a clamping gib |21. The swivel table |26 is pivotally mounted in the usual manner by means of a pivot pin |28 on a longitudinally movable work supporting table |29 which is adapted to be reciprocated.longitudinally of the machine on a base |30. The slide I|4 is provided to permit setting up the truing apparatus for. straddling a predetermined size of roll being ground and provides a. quick shiftin setting up the machine for truing a wheel when a different size roll is to be ground. 'I'he knob II1 and screw II6 are provided to give a ne transverse adjustment of the SupDOlIIng frame 95 after the slide I I4 has been locked in an operating position.
In order that the U-shaped frame 95 maybe adjusted into proper relation and supportedby the roll 96 being'ground, it is desirable to provide an adjustable shoe |35 which is arranged to engage the upper portion of the roll 96 to support the U-shaped frame 95 and the truing apparatus' frame I0. l'I'he shoe |35 is adjustably mounted on the frame 95 and is connected by a pivot pin |36 with an adjusting screw |31 which may be rotated by means of a knob |38 to adjust the truing tool 21 in a substantially vertical direction into the desired operating position.
In order that the truing apparatus may be readily inserted on the machine or removed therefrom after truing, it is desirable to provide a suitable readily detachable connection which is illustrated and comprises a pivot pin III having an end portion.which is provided with the slabbed-oif surfaces |40 and I4I. 'I'he frame 95 is provided with a cylindrical hole |42 of a.
diameter equal to the diameter of the stud |II and at its lower portion is provided with an opening |43 which is ofl a width slightly greater than the distance'between the slabbed-on surfaces |40 and |4I. When it is desired to remove the truing apparatus from the machine, the frame 95 may be rocked in a clockwise direction (Fig. 1) to swing the opening |43 into alignment with the slabbed-oif surfaces |40 and |4| and the frame 95 may then be moved toward the right as viewed in Fig. 1 and the entire assembly removed from the machine so that the grinding operation on the roll 95 may vbe resumed. After the grinding has continued and it is desired to again true the wheel, the
frame" 95 may be readily inserted in its former position with the pivots III supporting the end of the frame 95 and the pad |I0 and adjustable pad |35 resting on the surface of the roll 96. If the roll has been reduced in diameter, the operator may compensate for this reduction so that the truing tool is in the same relative position to the wheel and wheel axis by adjusting the knobs |38 and II1.
The forming bar 3| l and its supporting and adjusting arrangement, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, is adapted for use in producing a convex surface, such as a convex deection curve on the peripheral operative surface of the grinding wheel.
In the grinding of certain types of rolls, itis desirable to provide a concave curve, such as a concave deflection curve, on the peripheral operative face of the grinding wheel. In such a case, a modied mounting for the forming bar 3|, such as shown in Fig. 7, may be provided.
The'ends of the bar 3| (Fig. 7) may be supported by bolts 50 and i5! which are pro- 5 vided with substantially C-shaped heads |52 and |53 respectively. An adjusting screw |55 engages a threaded hole |55 in the depending portion of frame l0. Theend of screw |55 engages the center of forming bar 3| and serves to flex the bar to a curve of the desired extent so that when slide is traversed, the truing tool 2l will be moved transversely to true a concave curve, such asa concave deection curve, on the peripheral operative surface of the grinding wheel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A grinding wheel truing apparatus for grinding machines comprising a frame, a reciprocable slide thereon, means to reciprocate said slide, a truing tool carriedby said slide, means including a forming bar to move the tool transversely when the slide is reciprocated so as to produce a predetermined former contour on the operative face of the grinding wheel, and means to adjust the position of theframe to vertically adjust the path of the truing tool relative to the grinding wheel so as to modify the contour produced by said tool on the face of the grinding wheel.,
2. A grinding wheel truing apparatus f'or grinding machines comprising a frame, a reciprocable slide thereon, power operatedl means to reciprocate said slide, truing tool carried by said slide, means including a flexible forming bar and follower to move the tool transversely when the slide is reciprocated, means to support thev opposite ends of saidv bar, and adjusting means engaging the center of said bar to ilex said bar to a deflection curve so as to produce a deection curve on the grinding wheel face.,

AV grinding wheel truing apparatus `for grinding machines comprising a frame, a reciprocable slide thereon, means to reciprocate said slide, a truing tool carried by said slide, `means including a flexible forming bar to move the tool transversely when the slide is reciprocated so as to produce a predetermined contour on the operative face of the grinding wheel, means to iiex said bar to vary the contour of saidvface, means to removably attach said frame to the grinding machine, andl means to adjust the position of said frame to vary the path of 55 the truing tool relative to the fac of the grinding wheel.
4. A grinding wheel truing apparatus for grinding machines comprising a frame, a reciprocable slide thereon, means to reciprocate 60 said slide, a truing tool carried by said slide,
means including a flexible forming bar to move said tool transversely when the slide is reciprocated so as to produce a predetermined form on the operative face of the wheel, means to adjust 65 the -position of the frame to vary the path of the truing tool relative to the wheel, and means to ex said forming bar to vary .the shape produced on said wheel.

A truing apparatus for grinding machines 70 comprising a frame, a reciprocable slide on said frame, means to reciprocate. the slide longitudinally relative to the frame, a substantially vertical truing tool holder, pivotal connections between the upper `end of said holder and the slide, 75 a truing tool mounted on the lower end of said holder, a follower on the lower end of said holder opposed to the truing tool, a flexible forming bar having its opposite ends supported on said frame and arranged to be engaged by said follower, means to maintain the follower in engagement with said bar, and adjustable means engageable with the bar midway between its supports to flex said bar so as to produce a deflection curve on the face of said grinding wheel. y

A roll grinding machine of the type having a rotatable grinding wheel and a rotatable work .support which are movable longitudinally and transversely relative to each other, and a truing apparatus comprising a substantially U-shaped frame arranged to straddle 'awork piece, a supporting shoe on said frame adjacent to said wheel, a reciprocable slide supported adjacent one end of :said frame, a truing tool carried by said slide, means to reciprocate said slide to traverse the truing tool across the operative face of the grinding wheel, detachable connections between the other end of said frame and the machine, and means to adjust the position of said connections to maintain said shoe in an operative position.

A roll grinding machine of the type having a rotatable grinding wheel and a rotatable work support which are movable lormitudinally and transversely relative to each other, and a truing apparatus comprising a substantially U-shaped frame arranged to straddle a work piece, a reciprocable slide supported adjacent one end of said frame, a truing tool carried by. said slide, means to reciprocate said slide, means including a flexible forming bar which is supported at its ends to move said tool transversely when the slide is reciprocated to produce a predetermined contour on the wheel face, adjustable means engaging the center of said bar to flex it so as to produce aV deflection curved face on said grinding wheel and detachable connections between the other end of said frame and the machine.
8. A roll grinding machine of -the type having a transversely movable rotatable grinding wheel, a
longitudinally movable work supporting table, a
rotatable work support thereon, and a truing attachment comprising a substantially U-shaped frame, a reciprocable slide on one end of said frame, a truing tool carried by said slide, means to reciprocate said slide to traverse the truing tool across the face of the grinding wheel, detachable connections between the other end of said frame and the work table, and` a work engaging shoe adjustably positioned on said frame and arranged to engage the work on its upper surface so as to adjust the' position of said frame so as to vary the path of the truing tool relative to the grinding wheel.

A roll grinding machine of the type having a transversely movable rotatable grinding wheel, a longitudinally movable work supporting table, a rotatable work support thereon, and a truing attachment comprising a substantially U-shaped frame, areciprocable slide on one end of said frame, a truing tool carried by said slide, means to reciprocate said slide to traverse the truing tool across the faceiof 'the grinding wheel, de-
tachable connections between the other end of said frame so as to vary the path of the truing tool relative to the grinding wheel.

A roll grinding machine of the type having a rotatable grinding wheel, a longitudinally movable work supporting table, a rotatable work support thereon, and a truing attachment therefor, comprising a substantially U-shaped frame arranged to straddle the work piece, a reciprocable slide mounted adjacent one end of said frame, a
truing tool carried by said slide, means to recipl rocate said slide relative to the frame to traverse the truing tool across the face of the grinding wheel, a work engaging shoe on said frame adjaan adjustable shoe mounted on said frame and arranged to= engage the upper surface of said work to permit adjustment of said frame to vary thepath ofthe truing tool relative to the face of the grinding wheel.
