Description

DOOR-HINGE FITTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented May 1, 1917.
Application filed Apri127, 1916. Serial No. 93,911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jon-N JOHNSON, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Stoughton, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Door-Hinge Fitter, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a device by which hinges can be more accurately fitted and in much less time than when the fitting is done by hand without the aid of the device illustrated.
I attain the objects of my invention by themechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is avieW of the entire device applied to the jamb of a door; Fig. 2 i. an enlarged detail of one of the hinge positioning mechanisms; Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I provide a suitable rod 1 having a coupling 2, suitably threaded to engage with the threaded end of the corresponding rod beneath. Adjustably mounted to rod 1 near its upper end is a suitable curved arm 3 having a suitable screw 4 for securing it to rod 1 and having a suitable horizontal end portion 13 adapted to abut against the upper door sill asillustrated in Fig. 1. Adjustably mounted on rod 1, I provide a suitable hinge fitting member 5 having suitable screws 6 for fastening it in adjusted position, and having suitable openings 7 for temporarily tacking the fitter to the door with small nails or tacks N, as shown in Fig. 3. Member 5 serves as a support for member 11, which is the widthv indicating member in conjunction with member 5. As a length indicating member, .I provide a suitable vertically slidable adjusting arm 8 having a suitable screw 9 for adjusting or fitting lengthwise of the hinge, as illustrated. One of the horizontal arms of the U-shaped adjusting member 5 is provided with a suitable'horizontally slidable guide piece 11 having a projecting portion 14, as shown in Fig. 4, projecting into slot 10 to prevent member 11 from turning. Members 11, of which there are two, as shown 1n Figs. 3 and 4, areadjustably held in place by a suitable screw 12. In the drawings J indicates a door amb; and D a door.
In operation the end 13 of arm 3 is pressed against the upper sill, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the arm being held rigid by engagement of screw 4 with rod 1. Hinge fitting member 5 is adjusted to the position desired for the proper fitting of the hinge laterally and is secured to rod 1 by screws 6. Openings 7 are utilized in tacking the device to the door or jamb while the operator chops or marks with a chisel where the hinge is to be placed. The adjusting arm 8 may be moved up or down, as required to fit the length of the hinge. Guide piece 11 is adjusted to abut against the jamb or the door, as the case may be, to gage the portion of member that is to project over the jamb or door for fitting the hinge. The bur or projecting portion 14 of member 11 prevents same from turning in slot 10 in which it is horizontally slidable. The whole fitter can be taken apart by disconnecting the respective rods 1 from the engaging couplings 2, so that the device can be conveniently carried in a tool chest. It insures accurate fitting of the hinges on door and j amb so that the hinges will work in harmony. 5 In applying the device to the door, the curved arm 3 is positioned so as to project slightly above the door, to correspond with the elevation of the sill above the top of the door. the device is properly adjusted for the respective hingeswhich may be any desired numberthe operator takes a chisel and chops in where the hinges are to be located, the fitter is removed, the door and jamb are chiseled for the hinges, which are fastened in place and the door hung. No further adjusting is required as the hinges are accurately positioned and work in perfect har-' mony.
Vhat I claim is: a
1. A door hinge fitter, comprising 'a' 1e composed of a plurality' 'of sections}, at the end of each section for cbupling" it with the adjoining section, a. member slidably mounted and movable longitudinally of said rod, a second member slidably supported on said first mentioned member and movable laterally of said rod and adapted to indicate the width of a hinge, a third member supported on and slidable longitudinally of said rod and adapted to indicate the length of a hinge, and means to secure the members in their position of adjustment.
2. In a door hinge fitter, the combination of one or more rod sections, an upwardly When.
onwed mounted on theupper end of "mpeiinost section ind longitudinally ibie thereon, an approximately U- nember 'slldebly mounted 'and mov- 1d1na1ly of the rod on which 113 e tinted and having a slot 1n one of 1ts pareliei arms, and a second member sl dably tted portion and movable laterally of odto indicate the Width of a hinge.
U. In; a door lriinge fitter, the combination rod composed of releasably connected s arm slidebly mounted on end the upper sect-ion end longitudirted on the first mentioned member in nally adjustable thereon, approximately U- 15 shaped members slidably mounted and mova'ble longitudinally of said rod and each having a slotted portion, a second member mounted in the slotted portion of each and slidably supported on said first mentioned member dild ovable laterally of said rod and adapted to indicate the Width of a hinge, and means to secure the members in any desired adjusted position for fitting hinges.
