IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENERS FOR THE MEETING-RAILS OP SASHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,348, dated January 2, 1872.
To all persons to whom these presents may come:
Be it known that 1, JOHN ANDREWS, of
1 Marlborough, of the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window-Sash Fasteners; and do hereby declare the same to be described, as follows, and represented in the accompanying drawing, of Which- Figure 1 denotes a top view, Fig. 2 front elevation, and Fig. 3 an end view of my new sashfastener asapplied to the next adjacent horizontal bars of the upper and lower sashes of a window. It isdesigned to be used upon winthe middle of the contiguous horizontal sashbarsthat is, the bottom bar of the upper sash and the top bar of the lower sash.
Owing to the construction of a my improved fastener it can be applied to the middle of the said contiguous bars, as it will straddle the middle vertical bar of the upper sash.
In the drawing, A denotes the pivotal frame or carrier of the locking lever-catch B. The
said catch, instead of having its point a at the middle of the carrier A, as usual, has it disposed on one side of and at a distance from such middle, as shown, the carrier being pro; videdor constructed with a notch or opening, b, to receive the middle upright bar 0 of the upper sash. The said notched carrier straddies the bar 0, and rests on and is fastened by screws cl d to the lower horizontal bar 6 of the upper sash. The locking-lever or arm-catch B is formed with abend or elbow, as shown at f, and the catch-plate O is constructed with half (g) of its latching-flange concentric with the pivot of the catch-arm B, the remainder or other half h of the flange being correspondingly shaped, the same being so that the part h may not only serve as a finish to the catchplate, but as a stop to arrestthe catch-lever when at the middle of the catchTplate. The elbow of the catch-lever is to cause the straight part i of such lever to stand square or at right angles with the sashes when they are fastened.
