Description

UNITED STATES NATHANIEL D. FowLEE, OE VALLEY FORD, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,315, dated January 2, 1872.
SPECIFICATION. To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL D. FowLER, of Valley Ford, county of Sonoma, State of California, have invented an Improved Tug- Buckle; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are suiicientto enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use Iny said invention or improvements without further invention or eX- periment.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of buckles for connecting the tracetug with the haine-tug oi a harness, in which the tug passesbetween two bars without being bent and is held in that position by the tongue ofthe buckle; and it consists in providing the buckle or frame-work with a peculiar tongue which is held in place by a spring.
In order to eiplain my invention so that others will understand its construction and operation. reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specication, in which- The buckle-frame consist of two side bars, a a, which are united at each end by rods b b. One end of each of these bars is turned upward, as shown at Fig. 1, so that the end of the tugG can pass between the end rod b and cross-rod d, which unites the side bars a a at the point where they are bent. The tongueE is loosely attached to another cross-bar, f, which unites the two side bars a short distance from the opposite end of the frame and extends forward toward the cross-rod d, where it is bent upward so as to pass through the hole in the tug and into a hole, z', in the flat staple-plate j, between which and the frame the tug passes. A Jdat spring, k, has one end also secured to the cross-bar j', and extends forward so as to bear against the under side of the tongue and keep it in place.
By this means I provide a buckle o f great strength, and one that can be easily released when desired in Order to change its position.
The peculiar construction ofthe tongue permits the strain to come square upon the side of the hole in the tug, so 'that it will last much longer than when the ordinary tongue is elny ployed. TheV bar b provides a fastening for the haine-tug, so that the two tugs will be connected to the buckle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A tug-buckle, consisting of the sides a, end rods b b', cross-rods f d, flat staple j, tongue E, and spring lc, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
In witness that the above-described invention is claimed by me I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
NATHANIEL D. FOWLER. [L. s.]
