To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. HENRY J. TYNAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Paterson, county of Passaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stripping- Stands, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for stripping skeins from reels, and it is particularly adapted for use in mills, as silk, cotton, woolen mills and the like, where yarn, wound on reels, must be removed therefrom.
@ne of the principal sources of loss in stripping skeins from reels is caused by the yarn being soiled as by coming in contact with the oily shaft, hearings or other mechanical working parts of the reels, and it is one of the objects of this invention to provide a structure by which the skeins are protected from coming in contact with and being soiled by such parts of the apparatus, as has heretofore been possible.
Another object of the invention consists in the provision of a convenient form of support for the reels in which, while they are held securely during the stripping operation, they may be readily turned and manipulated in various ways, and the provision of a support for the skeins upon which they may be placed when removed from the reel and afterward removed from such support when the reel has been taken away, and I preferably arrange such skein support so as to form substantially a continuation in length through the reel, so that the transfer of the skein from the reel to the skein support may be effected in a ready and convenient manner.
Other objects of the invention will appear in connection with the following description, and with the foregoing and related ob jects in view, my invention consists in the parts, improvements and combinations here in set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, I have illustrated one form in which my invention may be embodied, but it is to be understood that the same is for the purpose of illustration only and that my invention is not limited to the specific form shown except as required by my claims.

The reel is designated generally by the reference numeral 10 and comprises a shaft 11 having diverging arms 12 carrying the longitudinally arranged slats 13, one of said slats 13 being carried on pivoted arms 12 so that the same may be folded in toward the shaft 11, as is customary, in order to loosen the tension on the skeins and to fa- These reels, which are received and rotated in winding apparatus designed for such purpose and are removed therefrom in order to permit stripping of the skeins, customarily have a pulley wheel 14 near one end by which power is applied in the winding machine for their rotation, and one or more gears 15 near th opposite end of the shaft 11 which may serve a variety of purposes, as, for instance, they may serve to control the operation of the traverse during the winding of the skeins. My improved skein stripper and reel support is designed in view of such structure, and I have provided means for receiving the said pulley wheel rotatably and also for holding it against endwise movement in one direction. Such supporting means may 3 comprise a standard 16 having an arcuate seat 17 for the reception of the pulley wheel 14 and an upright flange 18 against which the edge of the pulley may rest, thereby preventing longitudinal movement of the reel. At the opposite end of the reel any convenient standard, such as 19, is provided with a head 20, and a sleeve 21 projecting from such head toward the standard 16 is provided with means for receiving the end of the shaft 11 and for forcing the reel toward the flange 18 on the standard 16. In the form shown, a smaller sleeve 22 is received in the sleeve 21 and is pushed outward by means of the spring 23 interposed between the plate 2 1- and the adjacent closed end of the sleeve 22, which said sleeve is provided with an enlarged head 25 which, when the spring 23 is extended, may rest against the shoulder 26 on the sleeve 21. To put the reel in place in its support, the end of the shaft 11 opposite the pulley 14 is inserted within the sleeve 22 as far as it will go, the reception of the shaft 11 within the sleeve 22 in this case being limited by the gear 15, but there may be other limiting means, as shoulders on the shaft 11 or the like, and the reel is then pushed endwise against the force of the spring 23 until the pulley wheel may be placed within the recess 17, the spring 23 serving to hold the side of the pulley wheel against the flange 18. In such position the reel 10 remains stationary, but can readily be turned by hand against the slight turning resistance which is present, and the collapsible slat 18 may be pushed inward to free the skeins so that they may be removed.
The skein receiving device comprises substantially U-shaped arms 27 projecting from the head 20 on each side of the sleeve 21, the four points of attachment 28, 28 being spaced substantially an equal distance from the sleeve 21, so that the arms are held out of contact therewith, and the curved ends 29 of the U-shaped members 27 preferably project well beyond the gear 15 or other parts on the ends of the shaft 11, which may be dirty or oily and would soil the yarn if brought in contact therewith. While the members 27 are preferably U-shaped and preferably two in number, the formation of such members may be varied within wide limits so long as they are adapted to receive the skeins removed from the reels and to effectively protect the same from being soiled and serve to provide an effective fender surrounding the soiled parts with which the skeins may come in contact.
The operation of the device will be apparent from the foregoing. After a reel has been put in place in the apparatus in the manner described, and the slat actuated to free the skeins on the reel, such skeins are displaced longitudinally of the reel and are received upon and supported by the members 27. The reel is then removed, thus taking away all parts which may possibly cause soiling of the skeins, and the skeins are then removed from the supporting members 27, the rounded ends 29 facilitating their removal and also serving as a guide to direct the skeins upon such members as they are removed from the reel. The members 27 project within the open end of the reel between the blades or slats 13 so that there is no opportunity for the skeins to fall or be caught between the reel and the skeinreceiving device. The longitudinal portions of the members 27 are preferably arranged somewhat closer together than the blades or slats 13 in order that, as shown in Fig. l, they may come inside of the skeins in all rotative positions of the reel. The members 27 provide an open or skeleton frame and are spaced well away from the sleeves 21 and 22, and with this construction the operator can readily put her hand through between the skeins and, reaching across on the inside of the skeins, can separate the skeins without any danger of disarrangement or disalinement of the threads, such as may oc cur when the skein-receiving device is not of open or skeleton construction.
It will be seen that apparatus embodying my invention facilitates the handling of the skeins and protects them from becoming soiled by contact with shafts and other oily and dirty parts, and that the structure is simple and readily operated and has various other features of advantage. My invention is not confined to the specific form shown for illustration, but various changes therein and departures therefrom may be resorted to within the scope of my invention and without departing therefrom or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of supports for the ends of a reel, said supports being spaced apart, and a stationary skein holder substantially in line with a reel held in said supports and at one end thereof. V
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of supports for the ends of a reel, said supports being spaced apart, and a stationary skein holder substantially in line with a reel held in said supports, the skein holder being adapted to receive skeins from the reel and to hold the skeins from contact with the reel shaft.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of means for holding and pushing endwise on the shaft of a reel, means spaced away therefrom for rotatably supporting the opposite end of the reel and for holding it against endwise movement, and a stationary skein holder substantially in line with a reel held in place on the reel support.
4c. In a device of the class described, the combination of a skein holder comprising a support, a plurality of arms projecting laterally therefrom, and means for detachably supporting a reel with its shaft between said arms.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a skein holder comprising a pair of U-shaped arms arranged side by side and in substantially vertical planes, and means for detachably supporting a reel midway between the arms.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination of a sleeve for receiving the shaft of a reel, a spring for projecting said sleeve and the reel held therein, means for rotatably supporting the opposite end of the reel and holding it against the action of said spring, and a skein holder comprising a plurality of arms projecting beyond said sleeve and arranged substantially concentrically With respect thereto.
7. In a device of the class described, the combination of means for supporting and detachably holding a reel, and a skein holder comprising a plurality of spaced arms,- said arms arranged closer together than and adapted to be received between the skein holding members of a reel supported by said reel holding means.
8. In a device of the class described, means for supporting a reel, and a skein-receiving device of skeleton fornrprojecting Within the end of a reel supported by said supporting means.
9. In a device of the class described,means for supporting a reel shaft, and a skeleton skeinreceiving device surrounding said means and spaced away therefrom to provide room for the hand of the operator between the skein-receiving device and the shaft supporting means.
10. In a device of the class described, the combination of a pair of supporting memhere between which a reel is removably supported, one of said members comprising a standard, a head, a sleeve projecting laterally from the head, a second sleeve in the fi'rst named sleeve for receiving the reel shaft, and a spring for projecting the second sleeve from Within the first sleeve, the said head having a plurality of U-shaped arms secured thereto and extending on each side of the first-named sleeve for receiving the skeins from the reel and holding the same out of contact With the shaft and other oily or dirty parts, and the remaining reel supporting member comprising a standard and an arcuate recess With a flange adjacent thereto for receiving a pulley on the reel and holding the pulley and reel against movement away from the first-named supporting member.
