Application July.22, 1936, Serial No. 92,003 6 Claims. 01. 242 115) This invention relates to holders, and its general object is to provide a holder in the form of a reel primarily designed to receive yarn'and the like, and for use in knitting, so that the yarn will a convenient manner but can be readilyunwound from the holder, as it is being used, thereby facilitating easy and expeditious knitting, without fear of the yarn becoming tangled or caught.

A further object of the invention is to provide a yarn holder that is collapsible or foldable into a compact-form, so that it can be conveniently carried in a knitting bag or the like.

Another object of the invention is to provide a yarn holder that includes interchangeable reel means to accommodate yarnin various forms, such as loosely or tightly Wound balls, skeins, hanks or spools.

A still further objectof the invention is to provide a yarn holder, that'is substantially made from wire, is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and extremely efficient in use, operation and service.

This invention also consists in certain other, features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the yarn holder which forms the subject matter of the present invention.

Figure 2 is an end view showing the holder in folded position.

Figure 3 is a sectionai view taken approximately on line 3-3 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows. V

Figure 5 is a modified form of reel for use with spools and tightly wound balls of yarn.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the body of my holder includes three main parts, each of which is formed from a single strand of wire into rectangular formation, to provide a longitudinal portion with parallel arms formed thereon and disposed at right angles with respect thereto.

The longitudinal portion of one part which may be termed the base is indicated by the reference numeral I, and the arms 2 thereof terminate at their free ends in form of what may their free ends into eyes 3 which receive the longitudinal portion 4 of one sidepart adjacent the juncture of the arms 5 therewith.

The longitudinal portion of the other side part is indicated by the reference numeral 6, and the arms 1 thereof, as well as the arms 5 terminate at eyes 8 and 9, which are held in pairs, as best shown in Figures 1 and 4 through the instrumentality of tend through the companion eyes, and have the ends thereof outwardly flared to follow the curvature of the eyes for holding the same together, as clearly shown in Figure 4, consequently it will be bearing sleeves l0 that exseen that the base and side parts are permanently 2 connected, and when the holder is disposed in set up position, the arms 5 and I are disposed in diverging relation toward the base part and cooperate with the arms 2 in providing the triangular formation, as shown.

In order to hold the body in set up position, I provide a spring clamp II that is preferably fixed to the longitudinal portion 6 midway its ends and includes inwardly directed jaws to receive the longitudinal portion I therein, the jaws having channels therein to provide abutment ribs I! to prevent casual removal of the portion I therefrom.

It will be obvious that the body provides a supporting frame for the reel, which is preferably made from two strands of wire including side portions [3 and [4 which have their inner ends welded or otherwise secured together as at I5, and the side portions M at their juncture with the portions l3 are outwardly bent to provide trunnions l6 that are mounted for rotation in the bearing sleeves Ill.

The cross pieces for the the reference numeral l1, and are inwardly directed toward each other for a portion of their length to provide yarn receiving portions I8 and abutment portions, [9 therefor, consequently it will be seen that the reel is substantially in the be termed a fiat spool, and hanks, skeins or loose balls of yarn are to be wound about the reel for disposal between the abutment portions l9, as will be apparent upon inspection of Figure 1.

It will be obvious that the yarn can be wrapped about the reel, either prior to or after applying the same to the body frame, but in any event when the yarn is removed therefrom, it is of course in applied position, and the yarn is removed as it is being used while knitting, it being apparent that the reel will rotate and thereby allow the yarn to be played off the same during the knitting action.

In Figure 5 I have illustrated a modified form of reel which is primarily designed for use with spools and tightly wound balls of yarn, it being apparent that a ball or spool is slipped over either of the trunnions 20 thereof and received on the straight portion 2| between the abutment portions 22 which are disposed at right angles with respect to the portion 2| and parallel with each other, While the trunnions 20 extend outwardly from the portions 22 to be mounted in the bearing sleeves "I, therefore it will be seen that the reels are interchangeable with respect to the body frame.

The body frame is readily collapsible and can be folded as shown in Figure 2, when in folded position, the reel can rest thereon, so that the device in its entirety will take up minimum space and can be readily carried in a knitting bag or the like.

It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.

It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is:

1. A holder comprising a foldable body frame including a base part and side parts, said side parts including'arms at the ends thereof, means connecting the arms in cooperating pairs and providing bearings, means for holding the parts in set up position with the arms at an upright inclination, and reel means mounted for rotation in the bearings for disposal between the arms.

2. A holder comprising a foldable body frame including a base part and side parts, one of said side parts being pivotally connected to the base part, both of said side parts including arms at the ends thereof, means connecting the arms in cooperating pairs and providing bearings, means for holding the parts in set up position with the arms at an upright inclination, reel means including trunnions mounted for rotation in the bearings and for disposal between the arms.

A holder comprising a foldable body frame including a base part and side parts, each being formed from a single strand of wire, one of said side parts being pivotally connected to the base part, both of said side parts including arms at the ends thereof, said arms terminating in eyes at one of the ends thereof, means securing the eyes in cooperating pairs to provide bearings, means for holding the parts in set up position with the arms at an upright inclination, and reel means mounted for rotation in the bearings for disposal between the arms.

A holder comprising a foldable body frame including a base part and side parts, one of said side parts being pivotally connected to the base part, both of said side parts including arms at the ends thereof, said arms terminating in eyes at one of their ends, means connecting the eyes in cooperating pairs and providing bearings, clamping means for holding the parts in set up position with the arms at an upward inclination, reel means formed from wire and being in the form of a flat spool, and trunnions for the reel means and mounted for rotation in the bearings for disposing the reel means between the arms.

A holder comprising a foldable body frame including a base part and side parts, one of said side parts being pivotally connected to the base part, both of said side parts including arms at the ends thereof, said arms terminating in eyes at one of their ends, means connecting the eyes in cooperating pairs and providing bearings, clamping means for holding the parts in set up position with the arms at an upward inclination, reel means including inwardly directed intermediate portions and abutment means extending outwardly from the inwardly directed portions and cooperating therewith to provide yarn receiving means, and trunnions for the reel means and received in the bearings for rotatably mounting the reel means between the arms.

6. A holder comprising a foldable body frame including a base part and side parts, one of said side parts being pivotally connected to the base part, both of said parts including arms at the ends thereof, said arms terminating in eyes at one of their ends, means connecting the eyes in cooperating pairs and providing bearings, clamping means for holding the parts in set up position with the arms at an upward inclination, reel means including an intermediate straight portion, abutment means at the ends of the straight portion for cooperation therewith to provide yarn receiving means, and trunnions extending from the abutment means and receivable in the bearings for rotatably mounting the reel means between the arms.
