(No Model.)
B. CHAMBERLAIN. YARN REEL.
No. 430,419. Patented June 17, 18 90k UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIZABETH CHAMBERLAIN, OF NE'W YORK, N. Y.
YARN-REEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,419, dated June 17, 1890.
Application filed November 13, 1889. Serial No. 330,213. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH CHAMBER- LAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improved Yarn-Reel, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct a device for holding skeins of yarn while the same is being wound into balls for knitting or other purposes; and it consists of a base having a standard rising from its center, upon which is a revolving runner carrying extensible arms, the end of each arm being provided with a U-shaped piece to hold the yarn when stretched over the same.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a view showing my improved yarn-reel in position for use, and Fig. II shows the same folded up while not in use.
Corresponding letters refers to corresponding parts of the drawings.
A is a base from which rises a standard B, supporting a revolving runner C, from which extend in opposite directions arms D, having at their outer ends U-shaped pieces E. The arms D are made in sections F,the outer sections being attached to the inner ones by eyes G at their inner ends, which pass over the inner sections and slide thereon. Through the band of each of the eyes passes an adj usting-screw II, which impinges against the inner section and allows the arms D to be fixed at any desired length. The arms D are pivoted to the revolving runner O, which is provided with spring-catches I, holding the arms up when in use, as shown in Fig. I, and securing them in a folded position against the standard B when not in use.
The manner of using my invention is as follows: hen it is desired to Wind yarn from a skein into a ball, the operator adjusts the outer sections of the arms to a sufficient length to hold the. skein taut, and places the yarn about the arms within the U-shaped pieces at their respective ends. By the winding of the ball the arms revolve, thereby assisting in unwinding the yarn, and at the same time preventing the yarn from sliding down or becoming tangled. When the holder is not in use, the outer sections can be closed upon the runner and the arms folded down against the standard, thereby enabling the same to be easily stored in an ordinary workbox. The base can be secured to a table or chair by a set-serew, or in any other desired manner.
WVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y 1. A yarn-reel consisting of a base A, standard B, revolving runner C, catches I, and folding extensible arms D, substantially as shown and described.
2. A yarn-reel eonsistin g of a base A, standard B, revolving runner C, catches I, and folding extensible arms D, having U-shaped end pieces, substantially as shown and described.
3. A yarn-reel consisting of a base A, standard B, revolving runner O, catches I, folding extensible arms D, eyes G, and screw H, substantially as shown and described.
t. A yarnreel consisting of a base A, standard B, revolving runner C, catches I, and folding arms D, each formed in sections, the outer one adjustable upon the inner one, substantially as shown and described.
ELIZABETH CHAMBERLAIN.
