INVENTOR lmss I r ATTORNEY @NTT n near an.
CHARLES B. HAYTON, OF CERES, VIRGINIA.
RAIL-JOINT.
Application filed January 9, 1917.
-, Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements 1n Rail-Joints, of which the fol-" lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in means for connectlng the meet ng ends of two rails.
in object of the invention is to produce a chair including a base and separable sides and to provide means for connecting the sides to the base and to the rails, wherein the sides will effectively bind against the 1 ing within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of two rails connected in accordance with the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same,
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the joint chair, and
Fig. 5 is a similar view of one of the side members or plates looking toward the inner face thereof.
In the drawings 66 designate two rails of the ordinary construction, and 77 the ties upon which the rails rest.
The rails are adapted to be connected by a joint chair which includes a horizontally straight base 8 of a width approximately equaling the width of the rails through the base flange thereof. The base plate 8 isof a length suflicient to rest upon at least two of the ties, and the same is provided with suitable openings 9 for the reception of headed securing elements 10, which securing elements enter the ties 7 and have their heads flush with the upper face of the plate 8, the openings 9 being reamed for such purpose. The base plate, upon its opposite sides, and at its lower edges is grooved or channeled longitudinally, as at 11, thus providing the upper longitudinal corners of the plate Specification of Letters Patent.

with outwardly projecting ledges providing tongues 12. points adjacent the ends of the plate are integrally formed with outwardly extending flat fingers 13, and each of these fingers is provided with an elongated opening lei.
Both of the side members or plates for the joint chair are of a similar construction and therefore the reference characters designating the parts of one may be considered as equally applicable to the other. Each of the side or fish plate members is shaped to be snugly received in the fishing spaces of the rails and the upper vertical plate thereof is provided with openings which are adapted to register with the elongated openings in the webs of the rails 6 and to receive securing elements, such as the ordinary bolts and nuts for the bolts. The horizontal or angular flange 16 is formed with a downwardly extending verticallydisposed apron portion 17 and which has its inner face formed with a longitudinally extending groove 18 to receive the tongue 12 of the base plate 8. The depending portion or apron 17 of each of the side members is further provided with openings 19 which join the groove 18 and which are adapted to receive the fingers 13 of the base plate 8. The numerals 20 designate wedge members which are passed through elongated openings l t in the fingers 13 and are adapted to contact with the portion 17 of the side members 15, to force the same in the direction of the rails, and into tight engagement with the said rails. The wedge members preferably have their lower or reduced ends slitted longitudinally and are bent in opposite directions from the said slit, to effectively hold the wedge members upon the fingers and in proper engagement with the side plates 15, as clearly illustrated in the drawings.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination with two alining rails and ties upon which the rails rest, of a joint chair for the rails, said chair including a base which issecured to two of the ties and These tongues, at suitablegated openings, said chair also including removable side members which are adapted to engage with the opposite sides of the rails and which have openings to receive the fingers of the'base plate and Wedge members passing through the elongated openings in the fingers and contacting With the side members to force the side members to ard the. rails. r r
r 2. In. a device for the purpose set forth, the combination with two alining rails, and ties upon which the rails rest, of a joint chair for connecting the rails, said chair including a fiat base member resting upon the tiesand underlying the rails and secured to the said ties, said base having its upper longitudinal corners formed with extensions providing tongues, laterally eX- tending, fingers upon the tongues having elongated openings, said joint chair also i11- cludlng removable side members which have their upper portions shaped to engage with the sides 01 the rails and to be secured to the said rails, the lower portions of the sides having their inner faces longitudinally rails, of a joint chair for connecting the rails, said joint chair including a base plate upon which the rails rest, said plate having its longitudinal sides each formed with a tongue, each of said tongues having a laterally extending finger, said joint chair also including removable sides having their inner faces shaped to snugly engage with the sides of the rails, said members having longitudinal grooves to receive the tongues and having openings through which the fingers of the base pass, and means passing through the tongues and contacting with the side plates for securing the side plates to the base plate and connecting the said side plates with the base plate.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
CHARLES B. HAYTON.
