GEORGE W. MIMS',"SR.,OFTHORSBY, ALABAMA.
RAIL JOINT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WV. MIMs, Sn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thorsby, in the county of Chilton and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in RailJoints, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to rail joints, and more particularly to the class of combined rail chairs and joints.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the meeting ends of railway rails may be joined together and clamped so as to securely fasten the same and thereby prevent the rail ends from lateral displacement, thereby assuring a firm and secure oint between the same.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which the meeting ends of railway rails may be seated for firmly holding the same, and also the said rail ends can be securely clamped and held united.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efi'cient in its purpose, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of a railway track showing the meeting ends of railway rails secured together and united in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 38 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sec tional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective View of one of the rail ends.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.

and 6 designate the meeting ends respectively of the rails of a track, the same being superimposed upon and joined by means of the device hereinafter described.
The device comprises a base plate 7 which in this instance is shown in the form of a cross tie, although it may be of any other form and will be hereinafter referred to as a base plate, in which are formed spaced parallel grooves or channels 8 providing seats disposed in alinement with the longitudinal extent of the rails of the track and in which are engaged the base flanges 9 of the rail ends so that the said rail ends will abut each other in the usual manner. Opening at medial points in the channels 8 and provided in the base plate 7 are slots 10 in which engage depending lugs 11 integrally formed with the rail ends 5 and 6 and project from the ends of the base flanges 9 thereof.
Mounted upon the base plate 7 at opposite sides of the rail ends 5 and 6 are clamps 12, the same being detachably secured to the base plate 7 through the medium of bolt members 13 which are passed upwardly through alining openings 14 formed in the base plate and clamp respectively, the bolts being provided with the usual nuts 15. The clamps 12 are designed to extend over the channels 8 so as to overlap the base flanges 9 of the rails and in this manner secure the rail ends in the channels or grooves S in the base plate, thus securely fastening the rail ends together and holding them united by the device hereinbefore described.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is The combination with a base plate having a rectangular shaped socket therein, of rail ends having depending lugs flush with the terminals thereof and engaged in the socket in the base plate, angle plates arranged at opposite sides of the rail ends and bridging the joint therebetween, protuberances formed on the said angle plates and em- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature bedded in the said base plate, and bolt lnemin presence of tWo WltIlGSSQEl.
bers passed through the base plate, the pro- 1118 N tuberances and the angle plates for fasten- GEORGE ii MIMb 5 ing the latter to the base plate and also \vit for sustaining the lugs engaged in the V. J GRAGG socket in the said base plate. J. R, M LLIiqs.
Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents. Washington, D. C.
