HENRY BROBERG, OF WARM SPRINGS, MONTANA.
RAIL-JOINT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Brion-ERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vfarm Springs, in the county of Deer Lodge and State of Montana, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Rail- Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rail joints and its object is to produce a device of this class through. the medium of which the adjacent ends of the rails in a stretch of track become interlocking, and the heads of the adjacent rail ends are beveled i the same direction, thus practically making the track one continuous rail and avoiding the noise and jar incident to the wheel striking the ordinary straight rail head.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following speci fication, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of the specification and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a rail showing the splice-bar secured to the web and provided with a cleat to be secured in the grooved base of the adjoining rail. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the rail illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. at is a side elevation of the rail to be placed adjacent the one illustrated in Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 6 are top plan views, respec tively, of Figs. 3 and &. Figs. 7 and 8 are inverted plan views of the same. Fig. 9 is a side elevation of two rails joined by my improved joint. Fig. 10 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 11 is a top plan. Fig. 12 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 11.

Each end of each rail is provided with my improved joint which consists of a splicebar 1 secured to or formed integral with the web 2 of the rail and projecting beyond the end of the rail and adapted to lit snugly against the web of the adjoining rail towhich it may be bolted if desired. The splice-bar l. is provided with a transverse cleat 3 near its free extremity which cleat is adapted for insertion in a transverse groove 4: formed in the base of each rail near each end. The cleats 3 are adapted to rest upon the ties to which they are spiked in the usual manner. The meeting ends of the rails provided with my improved joint are beveled in the same direction as shown thus avoiding unnecessary jar in use. Each rail is provided with one of my improved joints at either end arranged on alternate sides.
lVhat is claimed is The combination of two rails, each rail having its base transversely recessed, a splice bar made integral with the web oi? each rail, each splice bar being projected beyond the head of its rail and disposed upon the remote side or its rail web with relation to the other splice bar, a transverse apertured cleat carried at the tree termination of each splice bar to engage the recessed portion of the adjacent rail base and spikes for securing the said cleats to the rail ties.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY BROBERG.
Vitnesses J. P. BRENNAN, A. P. I-IARKs.
