ABNER W. SAMBERSON, OF
PATENT OFFICE.
BELMONT, WEST VIRGINIA.
RAIL-JOINT.
No. 904,364. Specification of Application filed February 1 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABNER TV. SAMBERSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Belmont, in the county of Pleasants and State of Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to rail joints, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a rail joint wherein nuts and bolts are eliminated as a fastening medium :second, to provide a strong and durable connection for rails that will provide practically a continuous tread for the rolling-stock of a railroad :-and third, to dispense with the use of splice bars and rail braces.
I attain the above objects by a construction that will be presently described and then specifically claimed.
Referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation of a joint constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a top plan of the end of one rail. Fig. 4; is a bottom plan of the end of a joining rail, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the end of a rail, illustrating a modified form of construction.
In the accompanying drawings 1 designates a rail having its web portion reinforced, as at 2 and provided with a vertical egg or oval-shaped tongue 3. The head of the rail is cut away, as at 4, while the reinforcement 2 has its sides or upper edges grooved as at 5. The adjoining rail 6 has its web portion reinforced, as at 7 and provided with an egg or oval-shaped socket 8 to receive the tongue 3 of the rail 1. The head of the rail 6 is extended and provided with depending side flanges 9 for engaging in the grooves 5 of the rail 1. The rails can not Letters Patent. Patented Nov. 17, 1908.
3, 1908. Serial No. 415,640.
1 be' placed together endwise, and must be placed one down over the other, thereby preventing longitudinal displacement of one rail with relation to the other. The spikes or other fastening means used for securing the rails upon ties or sleepers will prevent vertical displacement of the rails.
A modification of my invention is illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings wherein a reinforced tongue 10 is employed in connection with a central rib 11. The reinforced tongue is adapted to abut a reinforcement of an adjoining rail, while the rib 11 is adapted to fit in a groove provided therefor in the under face of the head extension of the adjoining rail.
The preferred embodiments of my invention are illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, and I reserve the right to make such alter: tions therein as come within the scope of the invention claimed.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new is In a rail joint, the combination with the two rail sections having reinforced web portions at their adjoining ends, an integral tongue carried by one of said rail sections and being substantially oval in plan view, the said rail section provided with grooves in its upper face between the end of the tread and said tongue, the other of said rail sections having a socket to receive said tongue and having its tread portion extended beyond said socket and provided with de pending flanges fitting in the grooves of the first mentioned rail section.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ABNER W. SAMBERSON.
