To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAN CEKUs, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail- Joints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to rail joints, and the objects of my invention are, first, to connect the confronting or abutting ends of rails in a manner that eliminates splice bars; second, to provide a joint that has interlocked portions that prevent one rail from becoming laterally displaced relatively to another rail, and third, to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is durable and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in a novel construction, to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the rail joint, Fig 2 is a plan of the same, Fig. 8 is a cross sectional view taken on the line IIIIII of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line IVIV of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a plan of one of the rails.
The reference characters A and B generally denote the'ends of rails that are connected together in accordance with this invention.
The rail A has the web 1 and base flanges 2 thereof cut away wherebythe head 3 of said rail will protrude beyond the web. The head 3. has the overhanging portion thereof provided with depending side flanges 1 and at the end of the head 3 said flanges terminatein depending apertured ears 5.
The rail B has the head 6 thereof cut away whereby the web 7 of said rail can extend into the channel 8 formed by the flanges 4 of the rail A. The web 7 of the rail B has longitudinal side ribs 9 that support the flanges 4 of the rail A. The ribs 9 extend from the end of the web 7 to a point inproximity to the head 6 and provide clearance for the apertured ears 5, which seat against the braces 10 connecting the head 6 and the base flanges 11 of the rail B. The Web 7 is provided with a transverse opening 12 alining with the openings in the ears 5 and extending through said openings is a bolt 13 provided with a nut let. The bolt and nut constitute means for locking the rails A and B whereby one rail cannot move longitudinally with respect to the other, and this fastening means is reinforced by the apertured ears 5 extending between the ends of the ribs 9 and braces 10.
What I claim is In a rail joint, rails A and B adapted to have the ends thereof connected together, the rail A having the web and base flanges thereof cut away to provide an overhanging head that has depending side flanges terminating in apertured ears, the rail B having the head thereof cut away whereby the web of said rail can extend between the depending flanges of the rail A, longitudinal ribs carried by the sides' of the rail B and supporting the depending flanges of the rail A, braces carried by the rail B and engaging the apertured ears of the rail A, and means extending through the apertured ears of the rail A and the web of the rail B for locking said rails together.
