To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MosEs LnorrARD, a citizen of the United States, residmg at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to means for con necting the meeting ends of railway rails, and the primary object is to provide a novel rail chair to which the confronting ends of the rail sections can be easily and quickly clamped.

Another object of the invention is to provide a rail joint that shall prevent the lateral and vertical movement of the rails, but which at the same time will permit of the desired longitudinal movement of the said rails incident to the expansion and contraction thereof.

`With the above and other objects in view the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.

The rails l-l are of the usual construction having their webs provided with the usual openings to receive the securing bolts.

The ends of the rails 1 rest upon the base member 2 of a joint chair constructed in accordance with my invention and the said4 joint chair is supported upon and spiked to the ordinary ties 3.

The base 2 has its edges notched to receive the securing spikes, and the said base, adjacent the edges thereof, is formed with vertically extending flanges 4 and 5 respectively, and the upper surfaces of the said anges are inclined to the edges of the base.

The flange 4 is vertically straight and is intersected by round openings 6-6 which are disposed inward of the securing spikes upon this side of the base. These openings 6 are adapted to register with similar openings 7 in the horizontal flange 8 of one of the side members orlish plates for the joint chair. This side or fish plate 9 has the underface of its said horizontal flange 8 inclined or beveled to correspond with the beveled upper surface of the flange 4, and the said underface of the said flange 8 is formed with a longitudinally extending rib 10 that is-adapted to abut with the flange 4 of the base 1. rlhe horizontal portion or flange 8 of the fish plate 9 is notched, the said notches registering with the notches upon this side of the base plate so that the securing elements may have their heads contacting with lthe upper face of the horizontal member or flange 8 of the fish plate. The vertical member 11 of the fish plate is provided with a plurality of openings which are adapted to register with the openings in the webs of the rails 1 and to receive the securing nuts 13.

Passing through the registering openings 6 and 7 and preferably contacting with the longitudinal edges of the base flanges of the rails 1 are bolt members 14 provided with nuts 15, and these bolts are adapted to more eectively sustain the fish plate 9 upon the base plate 2 and in operative connection with the rails 1.

It is, of course, to be understood that the bolts 12 are not applied until after the second side member or fish plate of the joint chair is connected thereto, the said second side or sh plate being indicated by the ynumeral 16.

rlhe flange 5 of the base 2 is cut throughout the entire length thereof as indicated by the numeral 17, and is arranged at an angle with respect to the central longitudinal plane of the said base 2. The flange 5, at the wider portion thereof, but inward of one of the securing spikes for the base is provided with a rectangular notch that communicates with` a similar opening in the said base, the same being indicated by the numeral 18. rThe horizontal flange of the fish plate 16 has its outer edge disposed angularly with respect to the vertical member 19 of the said fish plate, and the referred to edge, indicated by the numeral 2Q, is

provided adjacent its narrower end with a plurality of spaced notches 21-21. The edge 20 is beveled as illustrated in the drawings to be snugly received by the undercut surface 17 of the flange 5. The fish plate 16 is of a materially greater length than that of the base 2 and the fish plate 9, which latter fish plate is of a length corresponding to that of the said base, and the vertical member of the said side or fish plate 16 is provided with a plurality of spaced round bolt receiving openings 22. It is to be understood that the fish plate or Side 16 is wedged between the flange and one of the sides of the rails 1 after the said rails have been arranged upon the base and the first referred to plate or side 9 has been associated with the said rails and with the base. When brought to the proper frictional contact with the flange 5 of the base 2 and with the sides of the rails l one of the notches 21 will register with the notch 18 so that a spike 2a may be passed through the registering notches and through the opening and forced within one of the ties 3, while likewise certain of the spaced openings 22 will register with the bolt openings 25 in the webs of the rails, so that the securing elements 12 and13 may be applied.

From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:

In a rail joint, the combination with the abutting ends of two rails and supporting ties therefor, of a joint chair for the rails, including a base upon which the rails rest and having vertically disposed flanges adjacent the edges thereof and the said edges notched, one of said flanges beingv arranged the openings in the base and having notches registering With the notches in the said base, spikes passing through the notches and entering the ties, bolts passing through the openings, nuts for the bolts, the angular flange of the other plate being notched adjacent to the wider portion thereof and the base of the plate having an opening communicating sh plate having its horizontal flange arranged at an inclination with respectto its vertical flange, the edge of the said horizontal flange being beveled to be received in an undercut angular flange of the base, the edge of the horizontal flange of the fish plate being provided with spaced notches one of which being adapted to register with the notch in the said flange of the base whereby a spike may pass through the said registering notches and enter one of the ties, the vertical flange of the referred to fish plate being provided with spaced openings to register with the bolt openings in the rails and in the vertical flange of the first men tioned fish plate, bolts passing through the registering openings, nuts for the bolts, and the last mentioned fish plate being of a greater length than the base and of a greater length than the first mentioned fish plate.
