AlNTI-IONY E. COYNE, OF MARION, ILLINOIS.
SHIELD on PROTECTOR.
marais.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY E. CoYNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Williamson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shields or Protectors; and I do hereby declare the follow* ing to bea full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention lrelates to new and useful improvements in shields or protectors and more particularly to that class adapted to be used by a person while washing the face or head and my object is to provide a device that may be clamped around the wrists to prevent water from passing from thehand on to the arms while using the handsv for bathing the face yor head. f
A further object is to provide a flexible or resilient lining for the protector whereby the circulation from the arms and hands will be uninterrupted when the protectors are clamped upon the wrists.
A further object is to provide a covering of rubber or similar substance for parts of the protector and so construct the same that the water will be drained from the protector in such manner as not to come in contact with the garments worn by the person using the protector.
And a further object is to provide means for quickly attaching or detach'ing the protector.
l `@ther objects and advantages` will bev hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the accompanying specification. i A.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part ofthis application, l
Figure l is a perspective View showing the device applied to use.` y,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof as seen on line 2 2, Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional. viewlas seen on line 3-3, Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings in' which simi-l lar reference numerals designate corresponding parts 4throughout the several views, 1 indicates the frame of the protector which is.v
preferably formed in sections 2 and 3 which, when properly assembled, form a .substantially oval band, said sections having ears Specification of Letters Patent.

4: and-5 respectively which are pivotally secured together by extending a ypin 6 transveisely through said ears.
Surrounding that portion of the pin 6. between tlie ears 5 is a coil spring 7, one end 8 of which is extended at right angles't-o the trend of the pin and rested upon the outer face of the section 2, while the opposite end 9 is extended in the opposite direction and rested vupon the face of the section 3, wliereby said spring will direct pressure against said sections and normally hold the section '3 in closed position.
Placed within the protector is a lining l0 of any suitable H exible material and over said lining is placed the covering 11 preferably of rubber, the outer edge of saidv covering having a flange. portion 12 which fits over the edge of the lining and frame of the protector, said flange being concave or cupped to form a channel 13 which will serve to conveyv any water flowing against the flange into a trough 14: of an extension l5 preferably formed integral with the flange.v v
In applying my device to use, the section 3 is thrown to an open position and the frame then introduced around the wrist in such manner that the extensionl will extend downwardly or'below the wrist and when outward pressure is released from the section 3, the s ring will instantly clamp the frame aroun the wrist with sufiicient' force to hold the shield in engagement with the tween the shield or protector and the wrist.
It frequently occurs that when the hands have been immersed in water and raised to wash the face or head that portions of the water will 'drain downwardly upon the .wrist and Acome in contact with the garf ments worn by the person, but by -rst clamping one of the protectors around each wrist the water is arrested in its passage and caused to drain off through the chan- .nels and trough, the extensions 15y beingof sufficient length to carry tlie'water beyond ,hands and it will likewise be seen that by wrist and prevent water from ypassing bel providing the and hand will be uninterrupted, although the rame isclampedinto engagement with the Wrist With suiiicient' force to hold the protector in position on the Wrist.
t Will likewise be -seen that this device can be very cheaply constructed and will be practically indestructible from use 'and that the same can be quickly engaged with the Wrist ondisengaged therefrom. Y
1. In a protector of the class described, the combination with a lframe formed in sections and means to hingedly'secure said sections together, of a flexible lining Within j the 'frame and a non-porous covering for said lining and edges ofthe frame, the outer edge of said covering having a flange concave in cross section to form a channel, and an extension having a trough formed therein communicating With said channel, Where-` by water contacting said protector will be Copies of this` patent may he obtain-ed for 'carried from the channel to said trough and discharged from the end of the extension. 2. In a protector of the class described, the combination with a frame formed in sections and means to hingedly secure the sections together and a 'spring adapted to normally hold the sections clamped around the Wrist of the Wearer, of a lining interiorly of said frame, a non-porous covering extending over saidlining and over the yends of the frame, a flange at covering arranged to form a channel, and an extension on said flange having a trough formed therein communicating with sald channel. A l
In testimony whereof I have signed 'my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
