Description

mpmvememwinaw Filers Vises".

PATENT OFFICE.
NATHAN H. BALDWIN, OF' LACONIA, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-FILERS VIS-ES,
Specification forming part of `Letters Patent No. 122,144, dated December 26, 1871.
Speciiication describing a certain Improvement in Saw-Filers Vise, invented by NATHAN H. BALDWIN, of Laconia, in the county of Belknap and State of New Hampshire.
Fig. 1 is arear view of my improved vise. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, partly in section, through the line w x, Fig. 1.
' My invention has for its object to furnish an improved vise for saw-lers use, which shall be simple in construction and convenient and relia ble in use, holding the saw firmly and enabling it to be adjusted iu any required position; and it consists in the construction and combination of thev various parts of the vise, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the foot of the vise, which rests upon the bench or support, and to which it is secured by a hand-bolt, B, which passes it up through the said bench or support and screws into the said foot, as shown in Figs. l and 2. C is the standard of the vise, the lower end of which is jointed and secured to the upper end of the footA by means of a bolt and hand-nut,` D. To the upper end of the standard C is pivoted the middle part of the rear jaw E of the vise Upon the lower edge of the middle part'of the rear jaw E is formed a halt' circle, ef, having a slot formed in it upon the arc of a 'circle having its center at the pivoting point of the said jaw E. F is a cross-head bolt, which passes through the slot of the half 4 circle e through a hole in" the upper end of the standard C, and has a handnut, jl, screwed upon it, so that by turning the head of the bolt F across the slot in the half circle e and tightening up the nut f the jaws may be securely held n place when adjusted. By turning the head of Y the bolt F longitudinally with the slot in the half circle e the head of the bolt F may be drawn through the slot in the half circle e and into a recess formed in the upper end of the standard C to receive it, thus allowing the position of the `jaws to be reversed for holding the saw to joint the teeth. When turned into this position the jaws are secured in place by a simple device, not shown in the drawing. G is the forward jaw, which is made similar to the rear jaw E except that ithas no half circle formed upon it. Upon the upper edges of the endsof the jaws E and Gr are formed upwardly-projecting ears H toreceive the hand-bolts I, which pass through holes in the ears of the real` jawE Vand screw into holes in the ears of the forward jaw G so as not only to support the' said jaw G but also to draw the jaws E G together to clamp the saw between them and hold it firmly while being operated upon.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-,-
An improved saw-lers vise, formed by the combination of the 'foot A, hand-bolt B, jointed standard C, bolt and hand-nut D, jaw E provided with a slotted half circle e', cross-head bolt F,
hand-nut j", jaw G, ears H, and hand-bolts I.
with each other, said parts 'being constructed and operating substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
NATHAN H. BALDWIN.
