IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-SETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,456, dated July 16, 1872.
resents a side view of the improved saw-set,
and Fig. 2 a top view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A and B are the handles and jaws, which are pivoted together at the point 0, so that they work like a pinchers, the saw-teeth being set between the jaws. The jaw A forms a bed, D, and the jaw B, which is pointed, as seen in Fig. 2, works thereon, the tooth being griped between the two. To guide and govcm the saw-plate two extra jaws are connected with the jaw A, which latter extends forward with a set-screw, E. The two extra jaws are marked F and G. The jaw F is hinged to the forward portion of the tooth-bed D by the pivot H, with its forward end resting on the end of the set-screw E, by which screw the jaw is graduated to form more or less of an angle with the tooth-bed D. Upon this angle depends the amount of set which is given the teeth of the saw. The plate of the saw rests upon the j aw F, and is held in that position by the jaw G, which is so arranged that while each tooth is being set this upper jaw G is pressed down onto the saw-plate. This jaw is attached to the jaw A by the joint-pivot H, so that both the extra jawsare jointed by the same pivot. The jaw G extends back over the handle A, and has a thumb-screw, I, which works through it as through a screw-nut. This screw passes through the jaw or handle A, and its end is fixed or fastened in the jaw or handle B so that it may freely revolve but have no longitudinal motion. J is a spring, attached to B, whose duty it is to throw the jaws apart.
By this construction and arrangement it will be seen that the saw-plate is griped and held fast while its teeth are being set, and that the amount of set can be regulated by the set-screws, as may be desired.
I do not confine myself to the precise form or arrangement of any of the parts described, as variations may be made without departing from my invention.
, Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A saw-set, consisting of the jaws and handles A B, bed D, extra jaws F G, and screws E and I, when the same are arranged to operate substantially as described.
SAMUEL H. OALLIGAN.
