Description

T. W. CARNEY.
SPLASH BOARD FOR SINKS.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. I0. 1917- Pi ltented Apr. 3, 1917.
WITNESS SPLASH-B01 non SINKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 3,11%,
Application filed February 10, 1917. Serial No. 147,807.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. CARNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clifton, in the county of lassaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new water from falling outward onto the cloth-- ing of a person standing in front of the sink, as in washing dishes and the like, such means being constructed so as efliclently to perform its principal function, thus ind cated, and also so that when not in use it may be shifted to such position as to be wholly out of the way. My invention may be applied to tubs, bath-tubs and the like, the term sink as herein used comprehending all such vessels or receptacles.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my splash-board attached to a sink;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the sink and splash-board; and,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the splashboard, detached.
The sink a shown has a marginal flange I) projecting outwardly, as is common in a well-known type of smks. It is supported by being attached at-the back to the wall and by the legs 0 at the front.
For supporting the splash-board, I may attach to the legs 0 the brackets. alwhich reach up outward of the front wall of the sink under its flange b. The splash-board is pivoted to the upper ends of these brackets so as to hang pendent therefrom but be capable of being swung outwardly and upwardly to an upstanding position.
The splash-board is preferably formed of a piece of sheet metal e of substantially oblong shape and having at each of the corners formed by one long side and the two short sides of the piece an ear 7 which is bent into perpendicular relation to the plane of the body of the sheet, both such ears projecting in the same direction from the body of the sheet.
Slits g are out into the sheet from the aforesaid long side thereof, whereupon the intervening portion h of the sheet is bent outwardly from the body thereof (to wit in the same direction as the ears 1) in reverse curves It h" (Fig. 2).
The cars f and theends of the brackets are provided with suitable holes, and through these are passed the bolts 11 which afford a. horizontal axis on which the splashboard is pivotally movable with reference to the si The splash-board when not in use hangs pendent as shown in Fig. 1, and in such position imparts a finish to the front of the sink. When the splash-board is to be used to confine the splashings of water, it is swung up to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, where its upward pivotal movement is limited by contactof the splashboard with the flange b of the sink. In this position, the splashings which are thrown onto the splash-board and run down thereon will be diverted by the lip h (which it will be noted closes the opening which would otherwiseexist between the splash board and the sink flange) into the sink.
In order to afford a certain amount of friction to the pivotal movement of the splash-board, thus to keep it from falling from the upstanding position if accidentally moved, I provide springwashers 7' on the .bolts 2', the same maintainlng a certain pressure upon the ears 7 and brackets (1 when the bolts, by screwing up their nuts, are clamped up tight.
.It is preferredthat the splash-board be enameled or otherwise treated so as to conform with the finish of the sink.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination, a sink structure and a splash-board pivoted thereto on a horizontal axis outward of one upright wall of said structure, said splash-board having limited pivotal movement from a position where it hangs pendent relatively to said axis to a position where it upstands therefrom. Y
2. In combination, a sink structureand a splash-board pivoted thereto on a horizontal axis outward of one upright wall of lib said structure, said splash-board having limited pivotal movement from a position whereit hangs pendent relatively to said axis to" a position where it upstands therefrom and having a lip projectlng outwardly in the pendent positionv of the splash-board and adapted to overhang the margin of said wall in the upstanding position of :said
I splash-'board.
limited pivotal movement from a position where it hangs pendent relatively to said axis to a position where it upstands therefrom and consisting of a piece of sheet material having the edge portion thereof which in pivotal movement of the splash-board remalns always nearest said wall bent out- -wardly and thereby adapted to overhang sa d wall in the upstanding position of the splash-board. a 4. In combination, a sink structure havinga marginal outward flange on one upright wall thereof and a splash-board pivoted tosaid structure on a horizontal axis beneath the flange and hanging pendent, the pivotal part of said splash-board projecting .forwardly, whereby the splash-board may be swung outwardly and upwardly and come torest against-the sink structure in an upstanding position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
THOMAS W. CARNEY.
