Description

Feb. 15 1927. 1,618,032
F. WILKES SPLASfiBOARD Filed Oct; so. 1926 INVENTOR Patented Feb. 15, 1927.
UNITED STATES FEEDER-1C WILKES, OF WILKINSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPLASHBOARD.
Application filed October 30, 1926. Serial No. 145,107.
My invention relates to splash boards, and particularly to a board or guard plate for preventing a person being splashed when standing at a sink.
One object of my invention is to provide a splash guard of more simple and effective form than those heretofore employed.
Another object of my invent-ion is to provide a splash board having supporting means which are automatically adjustable to sinks of various sizes and contours.
One form which my invention may take is shown in the accompanying drawing wherein Fig. 1 is a transverse sectional view of a portion of a sink with my splash board in position; Fig. 2 is a rear elevational view of the board of Fig. 1, viewed from the right hand side of Fig. '1; Fig. 3 is about elevational view of the board, and Fig. 4: is a view, on an enlarged scale, taken on the line IVIV of Fig. 2.
The board or guard plate 5 is preferably of sheet metal which may be suitably enameled. The plate 5 is provided with an upper curved edge 6 that serves to stiffen the plate and to present a smooth surface to the body of the. user, and which may also serve to assist in catching water which is splashed against the plate. The vertical edges are rolled or beaded as indicated at 7, to stiffen the plate and permit use of material of lighter gage. The plate is also provided with a perforation 8 that ermits it to be conveniently hung on a nail or hook when removed from the sink.
Metal straps 9, are welded or otherwise secured to the back of the plate 5 and have eyes formed in the ends thereof, through which the rods 10 extend and by which said rods are supported for rotative movement. The rods are bent at their lower ends so that they will not become accidentally removed from the eyes. At their upper ends, the rods are'bent back so that they can be suspended upon the edge of a sink. These bent portions may be of any desired form, to fit sink edges of various contours.
The pivotal mounting of the rods 10 permlts them to be fold-ed fiatwise against the plate 5 when the guard is not in use, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The pivotal mounting of the rods 10 also permits them tobe turned at an angle to the position shown in Fig. 1, to closely engage sink rims of smaller sizes than that shown in Fig. 1. The rods may be of spring steel so as to yieldably grip the edge of a sink, or may be of softer metal so that they can be readily bent to fit a sink of any size.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I provide a splash guard that may be readily applied to a sink without the use of screws and similar fastening devices, and which can be folded to compact form when not in use, and. there being no loose parts which may become lost or misplaced.
It will be understood that a single hook may be employed, and that the hooks may be disposed for pivotal movement about axes that are non-vertical, and that they may be mounted in various other positions with respect to the plate 5.
I claim as my invention:
1. A splash guard for sinks, comprising a plate,'and a rod pivotally supported upon one side of said plate, for movement about a vertical axis, the said rod being provided with a hook portion for engaging the rim of a sink and being disposed wholly within the boundaries of the plane of the plate.
2. A splash guard for sinks, comprising :1 plate, and a vertically-disposedsink-engaging hook disposed on one surface of the plate, to each side of the vertical center line of the plate and being disposed wholly within the boundaries of the plane of the plate, the hooks havinglrotative movement about vertical axes from planes at right angles theretoto a plane in parallelism therewith.
In testimony whereof I, the said Funn- ERTO Wmxes, have hereunto set my hand;
FREDERIO WILKES.
