ASH TRAY Filed Oct. 1 6. 1957 j I INVENTOR.
ATTORNEYJ.
Patented May 28, 1940 UNITED. STATES P TENT] OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to ash trays and has for its object. to provide a construction which will enable a tray to be secured to a support, such as the edge of a table or the arm or back of a chair;
to be swung beneath the, support when not in use; and to be rotated'with respect tosaid support in order to dump the contents thereof.
. A further object of the invention is to provide an ash tray construction which is simple, compact, inexpensive, and whichcan be conveniently attached to a supportingobject. I
In the drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Fig. l 'is a bottom plan view of an ash tray,"showin g the same secured to the underside of a table; chair arm, or other support, the position of the tray when not in use being indicated in part by dot-and-dashlines; Fig. 2 a detail in section corresponding to the line 2--2 of Fig. 1; and-Fig. 3 a detail in sectional 2o elevation, the section being taken on the line 33ofFig.2. 3
Describing the various parts herein by reference characters, I denotes the support to which my ash tray is securedand- 2 denotes the ash tray, which may be of any ordinary orrstandard construction. 3 denotes a metal plate, which is secured to one side of the tray, beneath the, top
of the outwardly flaring side 2 thereof; This plate .is provided witha downwardly extending lip 4, which is pivoted to a like downwardly extended lip 5 carried by an anglebracket 5, the pivotal connection beingshown at 6. The, body or base of the bracket 5 extends beneath a metal mounting element 1 having its center depressed with respect to the ends I and is pivotally connected to the depressed central portion of said element by a rivet 8. The ends l constitute lugs or ears wherebythe element 1 may be detachably V secured to and beneath the support I, as by means of the screws 9. 7
4 and 5' denote projections which are struck from the lips 4 and 5*, respectively, the projection 5 being adapted to enterthe concave side of the projection 4 thereby to form la frictional means whereby the tray is ordinarily retained in a horizontal or receiving position.
first mentioned pivotal connecting means,
,Withthe' parts constructed "and arranged as .described, it isbelieved that the operation will be readily. understood. "The tray may be swung about its pivot 8 into either the operativepositionshown in full lines in Fig. 1 or into the in- 5 operative position beneath the, support as shown "by the brokenlines at the leftof Fig, '1. When it is desired toidump the contents of the tray, it can be yswung about the pivot 6, and, after the I contents-shall have been emptied, it can-be 10 swung back into the operative or receiving position wherein it will ordinarily be retained by the cooperating frictional locking members 4? a'nd5 j Fromtheforegoin'g descri tio it will be evi- 15 dent that I have; provided a simple, compact,
economical; and eflicient construction whereby theobjects referred to hereinbefore may be accomplished. 1 p 1 Havingthus described my invention, what I 20 claim is: f I
- 11The combination, with a shallow ash tray having a-,bottom andan upwardly and outwardly flaring side wall, of a supporting member secured to and beneath the side wall and beneath the-top thereof and having a substantiallyvertical lip projecting downwardly. therefrom with its lower end located above the bottom '0f said tray, an angle bracket comprising a base and a lip projecting at substantially right angles and T downwardly from the said base, means pivotally connecting the said lips, thelowerend of the lip of saidangle bracket being also located above the bottom, of the said tray, a mounting element having a central portion depressed below the plane of the ends thereof, the ends or the mount ingelement constituting means for attaching the said element beneath a'support, and means pivotally connecting the'base to-the central portion of,
said mounting element 7 r r i 2.- In the combination recited in claim 1, frictional means carried bysaid lips for normally preventing, the rotation of .the tray about the ANTOINETTE W. ZEMAN.
