To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WILBUIiN W. EGGERS,
\ a citizen of the United States, residing at of ordinary size may be rea Malad City, 'in the county of Oneida and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relatesito tongs, and particularly to instruments for carrying bricks. The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which isof simple and inexpensive construction, and which may be readily adjusted to bricks or blocks varying in sizes and shapes? A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is capable of, having its grip jaws adjusted, whereby bricks or blocks lar er than those dily picked up and carried about.
A still, further and particular object of the invention is to provide a device for carrying bricks which is composed of but few parts, which shall be inexpensive in manufacture, and which is capable of being quickly and easily operated either to grip or to release a brick and which embodies improved means for locking the tong members in gripping position.
With these objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel formation, combination and arrangement of parts,-all as will he described more fully hereinafter, illustrated in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein I Figure 1 is a sideelevation of a brick carrying device constructed in accordance with the invention;

The extremities of the bent ends or legs 5 are connected by a bar 7 the latter being secured to the extremities of the legs 5 by means of bolts or screws 8. This bar is provided throughout the. major portion of its length with a slot 9, the said slot terminating inwardly from the opposite ends of the said bar.
Arranged for sliding movement longitudinally of the frame and through the notched portion (5 at the bases of the legs 5 are grip arms or members 10. These members are guided through the notched portions of the said legs, andterminate at their inner ends slightly spaced from each other. The outer extremities of the grip arms are provided with angularly disposed gripping surfaces or 11, the latter constituting jaws between which bricks or blocks may be clamped.
Pivoted to the inner extremity of one of the arms 10 is a lever 12. This lever is of substantially L-shape formation, the upright of the adjusting rod is threaded in, a boss 19,
pivoted upon the horizontal portion of the lever 12, and a hand grip 20 is arranged upon the bolt 18 integmediate the ends thereof to facilitate turning of the same. The threads upon the extremities of the adjusting rod are disposed in opposite directions, so that turning of the said rod will draw the arms 10 toward each other or move them apart according to the direction of rotation of the said adjusting rod.
It will be observed, particularly with reference to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing, that the lever 12 has its horizontal portion crooked, and the boss 19 is positioned upon the said crooked portion of the lever so that when the latter is swung inwardly until its The adjacent end of the opupright portion engages the frame bar 4, the
said b'oss will'be past the center of the pivot bolt '14. This construction permits of the locking of the parts when the lever has been swung to inward position.
In operation, the lever is swung outwardly. whereupon the grip arms 10 move outwardly in opposite directions. The tool is positioned over a brick or block, and the lever 12 swung inwardly into engagement with the bar 4. This operation draws the gripping jaw members or plates 11 inwardly' lnto engagement with the ends or sides of 'justing rod 18 may be manipulated to regulate the throw of the gripping jaws.
From this construction, it is apparent that I have provided an extremely simple and yet thoroughly etiicient tong for quickly and easily picking up or depositing bricks.
From the particular construction of the var rions parts, it will be readily observed that derangement, wear or breakage of the same is obviated.
While the above is a description of the preferred embodiment of'the invention, it is apparent that various changes in theminor details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the claims.
What is claimed is:-
1. In a device of the class described, a frame, a base bar for said frame, the said frame being provided with notches in its ends, grip arms sli dably engaged in said notches, a lever pivoted upon the inner end of one of said arms, an adiusting rod connecting said lever and thrnsaljacent end of the opposite arm. and jaws cattle outer extremities of said arms, substantially as described. 4 U

In a device of the class described, a frame comprising a bar having angularly extending legs, the ends of said legs being notched, a bar-connecting said ends, the said bar being provided with a longitudinally disposed slot, grip arms slidably extending through the notchedends of said legs, bolts extending loosely through said slot and se cured to ti ends of said grip arms, a lever pivoted to one of said arms, a threaded bar connecting said lever and the adjacent end of said opposite grip arm, and jaws at the outer extremities of said grip arms, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, a frame, grip members slidably'carried by said frame and adapted to move. inwardly thereof to grip an article between them, a lever pivoted on one of said grip members, and a connection between said lever and the other of said grip members, substantially as described.
4. In a device of the class described, a frame, grip members arranged upon said frame and adapted to move inwardly of said frame to grip an article between them, a. lever pivoted on one of said grip members,
a link connecting said lever and the other of said grip members, and means associated with sa1d hnk for adpisting said grip members toward and away from each other, substantia-lly as'described.
5 In a device'of the class described, a frame, grip members arranged upon said frame and being adapted to move toward and away from each other, a lever pivoted at one end upon one of said grip members, the handle portion of said lever being offset and being adapted to engage said frame, a link pivoted at one end to said lever at a point removed from the connection of the lever with said gripmember, and at its o posite end to the other of said grip memberi and the pivotal connections of said link with said grip member and said lever being disposed out of longitudinal alinement when said handle portion is engaged with said frame, substantially as described.
6. In a device of the class described, a. frame, grip members carried by said frame and being capable of moving toward and away from each other, bars secured to said grip members and being in longitudinal alinement with each other, a lever pivoted to the inner end of one of said bars, a link pivoted to said lever at one end and at its -opposite end to the other of said bars and
