MOLD CLAMPING DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED APR. 3. 1917.

FRED :r. GIDUZ, or .ROXBURY, mnssaonusn'r'rs.
MOLD-GLAMPING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, FRED J. Gmuz, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Roxbury, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Mold-Clamping Devices, of which the following is a specification.
In the formation of cement walls, or the like, it is customary to hold the sides of the molds in which the cement is cast inposition by tie-rods, or similar means. The use of the ordinary threaded rod and nut is ob jectionable for this purpose, for various reasons, particularly because the method of tightening is slow, and in use, the threads become stripped or damaged.
The object of my'invention is to provide an effective clamping means for drawing together the walls of a mold and for locking them in position for use, which will enable this function to be quickly performed, and which is of simple and durable construction.
I accomplish this object by the means shown in the accompanying drawing 'in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a mold-clamping device constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is'a side elevation.
Fig. 3 is an end view thereof.
Fig. 4: is a side elevation of the device, including its operating means.
In the drawing, the sides a and b of a cement mold are indicated, through which a rod 0 is adapted to pass, said rod having a slotted washer, or rider d, mounted thereon, and adapted to be engaged therewith in a series of notches formed thereon and to engage one side ?2, of the mold. A flat metal plate or washer e is provided, through which the rod 0 is passed perpendicularly and which is arranged to engage the other side a, of the mold.
According to my invention a pair of arms f and g are pivoted about midway between their ends on a pivot bolt h extending through the end of the rod. The portion of the arm 7" at one side of the pivot is provided with a row of teeth f and the opposite portion of the other arm is likewise provided with a similar row of teeth g, said teeth being arranged at adjacent sides of said arms. The bar f is provided with a projecting pin 11 at one end, and the bar 9 with a pin j at a corresponding end.
An operating lever k is prov ded, to

which a pair of links on and n are, respec tively, pivoted, adjacent one end, and at a predetermined distance apart, longitudinally thereof, said links being provided, at their free ends, with apertures through which the pins 2' and 7' may be passed. 7
In using the device, the rod 0 is passed through the plate 6' and through the sides of the'mold, and the arms f g, are swung to nearly vertical positions, w1th the opposite ends thereof, from the pins 6, j, in engagement with the plate at opposite sides of the rod 0, as shown in the full line position of Fig.4. The washer 03 will then be placed in anotch on the rod 0 and in engagement with the opposite side of the mold from that against which the plate 6 is held. The link a will then be pivotally connected to the arm f, by the pin 71, and the link m will be connected to the arm 9 by the pin j, as shown in Fig. 4:.
When the lever k is pushed downward, it will be swung about a floating center between the point of connection of the link m and that of the link ntherewith, so that the link no will be drawn up and the link n drawn down, causing similar movements of the ends of the arms f, g, to which they are connected, and causing the opposite ends of said arms to be swung toward each other. Asthe latter are held in engagement with the plate 6, the plate 6 and pivot k of the arms will be forced away from each other, as indicated in the dotted line position of Fig. 4, so that the plate will be pushed against one side of the mold, and the washer will be drawn against the other side thereof, causing said sides to be forced toward each other. Obviously, the extent of movement of the plate e, or of the rod 0 will depend entirely upon the relative resistance offered by the sides of the mold.
When the sides of the mold have been forced to the desired position, they will be locked in this position by inserting a clip or wedge between the toothed sides of the arms f, 9, so as to prevent them from swinging toward each other, said clip having V- shaped sides adapted to enter the notches of the arms, so that it will positively engage the same.
After the clip 0 has been inserted the lever 70 may be disconnected from the arms, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the same lever may be used to force together the members of any number of similar clamps.
To disengage the clamp from the mold it is merely necessary to drive out the clip from between the arms.
The operation of both tightening and loosening the clamp may therefore be quickly performed.
Claim:
1. A mold-clamping device comprising a plate-member and a rod-member extending through and slidably in said plate member, a pair of arms pivoted on said rod-member and having the ends thereof arranged to engage said plat member at opposite sides of said, rod means to swing said arms toward each other while engaged with said plate and means to lock said arms against opposite swinging movement.
2. A mold-clamping device comprising a plate-member and a rod-member movable therein perpendicularly, a pair of arms intermediately pivoted to one end of said rodmember to swing side by side about a common axis, the corresponding ends of one pair of arms being arranged to engage said plate-member at opposite sides of said rod member, means to force the opposite ends of said arms together, and means to lock arms against opposite movement.
8. A. mold-clamping device comprising a plate-member and a rod-member movable therein perpendicularly, a pair of arms intermediately pivoted to said rod-member, at one end, approximately in axial alinement, the corresponding ends of said arms being arranged to engage said plate-member at op- 4 posite sides of said rod-member, to draw the latter therethrough, as the plate-engaging ends of said arms are moved together, and a clip adapted to be inserted between opposite end-portions of said arms to prevent opposite movement of the plate-engaging ends of the arms.
4. A mold-clamping device comprising a plate-member and a rod-member movable therein perpendicularly, a pair of arms in- In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
