WIRE-FENCE CLAMP.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WILLIAM F. VVAIN- RIGHT and J osnrn MONTGOMERY, citizens of the United States, residing at Vinchester, in the county of Scott, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful ire-Fence Clamp, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to wire fence clamps and aims to providea novel and improved wire fence clamp.
It is the object of the present invention to provide unique means for connecting and clamping the bars or sections of the clamp together.
Another object of the present invention is to provide clamping bars or sections having peculiar cooperating means for permit ting the strands of the wire fence to be securely gripped therebetween.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmental side elevation of the improved clamp. Fig. 2 is a top or end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the present invention, there is employed a pair of bars or clamp members 1 and 2, which are preferably fashioned from wood. The inner face of the bar 1 is provided with a longitudinal concaved groove or depression 3, while the metallic strips or cleats 1 are secured by means of screws or other securing members, to the inner face of the bar 2 to complement the groove 3. Thus, when the strands of a wire fence are clamped between the bars, the strands will be kinked or bent into the groove 8 by means of the cleats 4:, in order that the bars will tightly grip the strands, to resist the stretching or pulling loose of the strands. clamping means are provided, which may be of any number, according to the length of the bars, a description of one clamping device sufficing for all. Each clamping device embodies a plate 5 secured to the outer face or side of the bar 1, and a bolt 6 passes through the said plate and bar. A disk or plate 7 is journaled upon the outer end of the bolt 6 against the plate 5, and is provided with a spiral cam 8, upon its outer face. The disk 7 is also provided with a suitable handle or lever 9 for facilitating the manual rotation of the cam. The disk 7 is provided with a notch 10 at the inner end of the cam 8 while the plate 5 is provided with a slot or elongated opening 11, the notch 10 being adapted to register with one end of the notch 11. The plate 5 is further provided with a stop 12 with which the handle 9 is adapted to contact, when the notch 10 of the disk 7 is brought into register with the opening 11. A bolt 13 is secured through the bar 2, and is preferably provided with a head 14' resting against the outer face .of the saidbar, a pin or securing member 15 being preferably inserted through the bar 2 so as to engage through the bolt 13 for maintaining the bolt rigidly in position. The bolt 13 projects from the inner face of the bar 2 and the free end of the bolt 13 is designed to be passed through an elongated opening or aperture 16 formed in the bar 1, the opening 16 registering with the opening or aperture 11 of the plate 5, and the bolt 13 being provided at its free end with an angular lug or toe 17 adapted to pass through the notch 10 of the cam 8 when the handle 9 is swung against the stop 12, as above described. It is to be noted that the disks or plates 7 are rotatably mounted upon the outer side of the bar 1 adjacent the respective openings 16 therein, whereby the peripheral portions of the said disks work over the openings.
In practice, it being understood that a number of clamping devices are employed, the bars are ordinarily separated, prior to the clamping of the fence strands or wires therebetween, the bolts 13 being withdrawn from the bar 1. All of the handles 9 of the cam disks are swung against the stops 12, which will bring thenotches 10 of the cam disks in register with the openings 11 and 16, so that the bolts 13 may be readily inserted through the said openings with the fence strands between the bars. After the bolts have been inserted into the bar 1, the lugs 17 thereof will be projected beyond the faces of the inner ends of the cams 8, whereby when the cams are rotated or swung, they will engage under the lugs 17. Then, by further rotating the cams, the lugs 17 may be made to ride upon the cams toward their outer ends, so as to create a draftupon the bolts 13, so as to tightly clamp the bars together. The bars being clamped together, will cause the wire strands to be firmly gripped between the bars, as above intimated, so that the clamp may be connected to a wire stretcher to pull or stretch the fence. The bars may be readily separated, to detach the fence, by swinging the handles 9 against the stops 12 which will permit the bolts to be withdrawn from the bar 1. If desired, metallic strips 18 may be secured to the edges of the bars 1 and 2 adjoining the inner faces of the bars, in order that the said strips will prevent the fence wires from denting or wearing the faces of the bars, the said strips also serving to grip the fence wires.

Copies of this patent mag be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the a series of bolts engaged through one bar and having heads restingagainst the, outer face of the said bar, means for securing a the bolts projecting from the inner face of the said bar and having angular lugs at their free ends, the other bar having a series of apertures through which the bolts are proj ectable when the bars are assembled, plates secured to the outer face of the apertured bar over the apertures and having apertures registering with the respective aforesaid apertures for the passage of the bolts therethrough, pivot members engaged through the said plates and apertured bar, and disks journaled upon the outer ends of the said pivot members and bearing against the said plates, the disks having spiral cams upon. their outer faces and notches at the inner ends of the cams adapted to register with the said apertures, the plates having lugs to limit the rotation of the disks in one direction when the said notches are in register with the apertures, and the said lugs of the bolts being projectable through the notches of the disks when the bars are assembled to engage the said cams when the disks are swung properl f n testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
