Description

"3 HENRY c. LocKwooD.
Adjustable and Deachaluie Straps fo;q Garments.
No. 122,038. Patentednemgnan; Figi.
UNITEE STATES PATENT GEEICE.
HENRY C. LOCKWOOD, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,038, dated December 19, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY C. Locxwoon, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Adjustable and Detachable Straps for Garments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of my elastic strap for supporting pantaloons. Fig. 2 is a view, showing the strap secured to the pants, with the elastic inserted therein.
This invention has relation to an improvement in elastic waiststraps for pantaloons; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the elastic pieces, button-holed tabs, and bucklestraps, as hereinafter described and claimed. The object of the invention is to provide an etcient elastic waist-strap in which the. strain on the elastic pieces will be uniform at all points, so that it may wear evenly and endure as long as the pantaloons themselves.
A ofthe drawing designates the bodyvof apair of pantaloons. B represents the elastic pieces inserted on each side of the gathered portion of tlepaiits which lies in the middle of the back. These elastic pieces are trapezoidal in form, with the larger end uppermost, as the strain is usuually somewhat greater at the upper end. C C designate the triangular straps which are secured by their broad ends along the inner edge of each piece of elastic. These straps are gradually tapered, as illustrated in the drawing, as they extend toward each other, and one of them is provided Witha buckle, as is usual for tightening the waist of the pantaloons. The edges of the straps, 011 both the upper and lower sides, are
cut obliquely as they extend toward each other;
My invention may be readily applied to pants which are already manufactured by providing a waist-strap, as illustrated in Fig. l of the drawing. This waist-strap consists ot' two pieces, one carrying the buckle. The elastic pieces form the middle portions of each section, the broad triangular buckle-straps the center, a-nd the trapezoidal button-hole pins D the outer ends. There are also designed to be attached to the pants at the side seams the short button-pieces E by means ot' which the pieces D are secured to the pants.
I am well aware that it is not new to employ elastic patches in pantaloons. and hence I do not claim them, broadly. I do not cla-im any right of invention to the strap for supporting pantaloons secured to Samuel L. Clemens by his patent bearing even date herewith; but
I claim as my inventiong The elastic waist-strap for pantaloons herein described, consisting of the elastic pieces B, the triangular buckle-straps C, and attaching button-holed tabs, substantially as specified.
Intestimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY C. LOCKWOOD.
