Description

R. P. WRlGHT. v PRESSURE ROLL RELEASE FOR CLOTHES WRINGERS.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 25. 1916- Pa tented Mar. 20, 1917.
Inns 2?. WRIGHT,
To all whom it may meme- 1 'Be it known that I, P. WRIGHT, a 1hzen of the United States, residing at \Vashin'gt 'on,- in the. District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments'in Pressure-Roll Releases for Clothes- Wringers, of which the following is a specification,' reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
' This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a pressure roll; release for a clothes w'ring'er, the object being i to "provide a release in which a resilient retaining member is employed codperating wi'tli non rotatable sliding boxes mounted in the top bar of the wringer frame in such a manner that by bowing the resilient member' the' same can be contracted in order to move'theendsthereof out of engagement of the slidably mounted boxes so as to allow the boxes to move vertically with the pressure screws carried thereby in order to release the pressure on the pressure rolls.
Another object of my invention is to provide the threaded boxes with'beveled por-- tions adapted to engage the free ends of the resilientmember when forced into position within-the wringer frame so as to allow the boxes to be reset after they have been released.
Another and further object of the invention is'to, provide a clothes wringer with sliding boxes so constructed that'they are prevented from rotating within the bearing sleeves and are provided with means for limiting the upward movement in order to pre- I vent the boxes from jumping out of the frame when the pressure is released.
'Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
'In' the drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a clothes wringer showing the application of my improved construction of pressure roll release thereto; and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a threaded box and bearing detached.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In the drawing I have shown a wringer slotted side bars 2 carrying a rigid top bar mnITEDiFs AT-ns mama nail OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLU1VIBIA,'ASSIGNOR TO JOHN FRANCIS HEMENWAY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. I
rnnssUnn-noLL RELEASE non cLotrnns-wnmenns.
3 which is preferably secured within the slotted portions of the'side bars by a transversely extending bolt or pin.
Mounted within the slotted side bars are superposed bearings carrying pressure roll shafts 4 and having the usual rubber pressure rolls 6 and 7, and provided with meshing gears inclosed by gear casings as clearly Specification of I ietters latent. patg tefl Ri 2Q j gi g Application filed October 26, 1916. Serial No. 127,397 i style ofwringer now in use, and I have shown this particular form of pressure means, but I do not wish to'limit myself to any particular construction of pressure means for exerting the pressure on the pres sure rolls.
A vertical bore is formed in each end of the top bar 3 into which is driven a slightly tapered bearing sleeve 12, said sleeve being inserted from the under side of the bar so that the same will be held within the bore of the top bar by a wedging action so as to prevent the sleeve from moving vertically within the top bar after it has been placed in position it of course, being understood that the bore of the sleeve is cylindrical throughout its length, and that the outer surface is only slightly tapered. The sleeve is provided with oppositely disposed offset portions forming grooves 13 adapted to re ceive the oppositely disposed ribs 14 of an internally threaded cylindrical box 15 when said box is placed in position in the bearing sleeve so as to allow the box tosli-de easily within the bearing for the purpose hereinafter fully described.
The bearing sleeve 12 is provided with a notch 16 into which extends a lug 17 formed on the lower end of the box 15 so as to limit the upward movement of the box with n the bearing sleeve when, said, box isreleased.
The box 15 has a greater length than the bearing sleeve 12 and is provided with a notch 18 adapted to receive the adjacent end portion of a fiat spring 19 which is slidably' mounted in guideways 20 on the under side of the top bar 3, said. spring having acentral bowed portion 21 which is engaged by the head 22 formed on the lower end of the shank 23 of a push button 24 which is slidably'mounted within a vertical bore formed riedby the top bar of the wringer frame in order to hold the boxes rigidly within the bearing sleeves so that the pressure screws 24 mounted within the boxes can be adjusted so as to exert the proper pressure on the pressure rolls through themedium of the pressure springs, bearing plates and pressure bar as the pressure screws are brought into engagement with the bearing plates as they are screwed through the boxes w as to force the plates downwardly in orderto compress the springs. When the push button 2a is forced downwardly the spring 19 is contracted so as to draw the free ends from out of the notches 18 of the boxes 15 which allows the boxes to move vertically a predetermined distance within the bearing sleeves 12 so as to instantaneously release the pressure on the pressure rolls. I
In order to provide means for resetting therelease after it has been operated, I form the threaded boxes 15 with beveled portions 25 at their lower ends, adapted to engage the free ends of the spring 19 when forced downwardly into the boxes so as to force the free ends of the spring inwardly in order to allow the spring to expand into the notches 18 so as to lock the boxes in position within the bearing sleeves in such a manner that the pressure screws can be rotated to adjust the pressure means.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that'I have provided a clothes wringer with a frame having pressure rolls and pressure means for said rolls in connection with the movably mounted non-rotating boxes carrying pressure screws for adjusting the pressure means which are held in predetermined position by the resilient member so that when the resilient member is contracted through the medium of the push button the boxes will be released in order to release th pressure means.
