Specification of Letters Patent.
MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGIFI'ORTO UNITED SHOE OF iPATERSON, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF LEATHER-MARKER.
, Patented Jan. 6,1914.
Application filed March 2, 1911. Serial No. 511,799.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM W. Gonnorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn in the county of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Leather-Markers, of
- which the following description, in connec- United States Letters Patent No. 509,576,
ranted to me November 28, 1893, and used or stamping leather or soles for shoes. Heather markers of the type described in said prior patent comprise a handle having a head fixed upon one end thereof, the head being rovided with a series of die blocks projecting outradially therefrom, and having on their end faces raised letters or numbers. Since in some uses as for example, in stamping sizes on soles for boots and shoes, it is often desired'to mark half sizes or the like, detachable half size dies are provided, adapted to be attached to and removed at will from the die blocks fixed on the head of the implement. In the leather markers of the type referred to it has been thought necessary in order to hold these detachable dies securely against the jarring from the hammering blows of'thc implement to provide retaining devices whlcih, as generally made, have caused the detac 'iable dies to be diflicult of attachment and not readily removable, for example, stifi securing springs on the detachable dies and adapted for engagementwith recesses 01' notches in shoulered projections on the head of the marker being commonly employed.
It is obviously desirable that the detachable dies ma be easily and quickly attached and remove ,and accordingly it is the object of this invent-ion to provide in a leather marker of the type referred to retaining devices for the detachable'dies constructed to permit these dies to be attached and removed when desired conveniently and without appreciable loss of time to the operator, and
- in attached yet to construct the retaining device so as to insure that the detachable dies will be held position against displacement the to the jar-ring from the hammering blows of the tool. To this end,.I preferably chamber out the shank portions of the detachable dies and provide therein roller clutch devices comprisin rolls or rollers actuated by springs seate in the chambers, these rollers when the detachable dies are attached serving by their wedgin engagement with-the sides of the fixed ie blocks to hold the detachable d-ies firmly in the proper position while yielding readily to permit these dies to be freely removed when desired. Moreover this construction has the further advantage of doing away with much of the machine work formerly necessary on the head of the implement. It should be understood, however, that in its broad aspectmy invention is not limited to embodiment in an implement of the type referred to in connection with which it is illustrated and described, but it is equally adapted for use wherever similar objects are to be obtained. Moreover, various modifications of the precise construction hereinafter described may be made within the scope of my invention.
, Referring to the appended drawings Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a leather marker of the type referred to showing therewith a preferred embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is an elevation on an enlarged scale of one of the fixed (lie blocks with a detachable die attached to each of two opposite sides by the retaining device which forms the subject of this invention; Fig. 3 is a detail in elevation of one of the detachable dies, as looked at from line 3 of Fi 2.
in the implement of the drawings, 20 is a handle of a convenient shape to enable the operator to grasp the said handle and to use the implement after the manner of a hammer. Fixed to the handle 20 at one of its ends is a metallic head 22 carrying on its periphery and projecting outward radially therefrom a series of die blocks 24, having on their end faces raised numbers or stamps use of the same implement.
- ting ribs upon each'of two opposite sides of each of the dies 24; the ribs 26 extending lengthwise of the blocks 24 and forming grooves longitudinally thereof.
For enabling half sizes or a number comprising two digits to be marked, a series of detachable die blocks 30 is provided, each of the dies 30 having on two opposite sides of its shank portion integral flanges 32, formed as shown in Fig. 2 to embrace snugly the corresponding cooperating ribs 26 on the fixed dies 24 for attaching the dies 30 to the dies 24 when desired, the ribs 26 serving as runners or guideways along which the flanges 32 are directed for attaching the dies 30. Preferablyas shown, and as above suggested, the fixed dies 24 are adapted to have two of the dies 30 applied at the same time to opposite sides of any one of them so that a comparatively wide range of figures or letters can be used and numerous combinations effected in the Moreover, it will be observed that the detachable dies 30 can be used interchangeably on any of the fixed dies 24.
' The retaining devices for the detachable dies 30 which form the subject of fny invention comprise in a preferred embodi-E ment rolls 34 disposed in recesses chambered i in the shank or body portions of the detachable dies 30, the said rolls 34 extending at their opposite ends outwardly through slots 36 formed in the outer walls of the die blocks 30 and being confined in the recesses in the blocks 30 by disks or washers 35 (Fig. 2). Each of these slots 36 as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 extend obliquely outwardly from a point'in the outer face of the flange 32. Seated against each of the rolls 34 is a spring 37, the other end of said spring abutagainst the top portion of the recess formed in-block 30. These springs 37 tend normally to hold the rolls 34 in their inward and lowermost position in the slots 36. From the construction of the retaining devices it will be apparent that when one of the detachable dies 30 is .attached to a fixed die 34 by sliding the fianges-32 over the ribs 26 to the position shown in Fig. '2',
l the roll 34 will be moved frictionally against the tension of spring 37 upwardly and out wardly in slots 36' only a suflicient amount to enable the die block 30 to be easily attached as clearly shown in Fig. 2.' Since however, the .sprin 37 is tendm to force roll 34 downwar ly and inwar y in the slots 36, the said roll 34 will become wedged between the side of the fixed die 34 to which it is attached and the inner wall of the recess in the body portion of the detachable die 30 so as to Prevent dislodgment of die 30 by. reason 0 00 m patent may be obtained for the jarring blows of the implement.v The springs 37 may however, be comparatively yielding so that a relatively slight outward and upward pull on the disks 35 will allow the operator to remove the dies 30, the rolls 34 being thereby moved against the tension of the springs 37 to the outer.
and upper limits of their movement in slots 36 for thus removing the dies 30.
In operation the workman uses the implement as he would use a hammer, striking sharp blows to force the raised marking letters or numbers into the stock. To assist the operator in adjusting the tool for each operation so that the die bearing the number he wishes to be impressed upon the leather will. project vertically downward in operative position, a series of raised numbers positioned opposite and corresponding to the numbers on the fixed dies 24, is usuallyv placed as shown in Fig. 1 on the head 22,
these numbers conveniently beingsin relief of their background, the
and of a color contrasting with the finish head v22.
ont face of the Having now fully described one iilustrative form in which my invention may'preferably be embodied, what I claim as new and desire to secure by, Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A' leather marker having a head, a series of fixed dies projecting fromthe head, and a series of detachable dies, the said fixed dies and the said detachable dies being adapted to permit the detachable dies to be removably mounted upon the said fixed dies, and the said detachable dies having retaining devices comprising spring pressed rolls adapted to have yielding engagement with the said fixeddies, and provided with outwardly projecting enlarged ends readily accessible to the operator b means of which the said rolls may be ren ered inoperative to permit the detachable dies to be readily removed from thefixed dies.
2. The combination with a pair of dies having slidin interlocking connection, of means norma ly operative for preventing disengagement thereoffsaid means comprising a roller clutch device contained within the body portion of one of said dies and having its ends extended outwardly beyond the said body portion to provide means by which the said clutch device may b'e'rendered iinoperative to permit disengagement of the Witnesses:
