The bed 13 shown by Figure 4, is provided with a seat 16, on which the base 12is seated, and ears 17 and 18 at opposite edges ofthe seat. The'ear 18 is undercut and engages a beveled side face of the base. The ear 17, is provided with set screws 19, engaging the opposite side face ofthe base, the arrange ment being such that the base'may be removed from the bed when theset screws are loosened. When the platen 15 is raised, it is separated fromthe bed sufficiently topermit' the interposition of the attachment'betwee'n the bed and platen. v

Any suitable means may be provided for guiding the head 14 in a predetermined path relative to the base, and maintaining the head parallel with the base, such means being preferably embodied in studs 27, fixed as by set screws 28 to the head, and slidable in guiding orifices 29 in the base.

It will now be seen that an attachment having 7 a predetermined arrangement of punch members may be quickly and conveniently removed from a press, and'another -having a different arrangement of punch members substituted therefor, the vertical movement of the press platen being such that each descent ofthe platen'causes the coaction of thepunch members.
Figure 4 shows auxiliary means cooperating with the springs-30 to retract the head 14, and prevent the male punch members from sticking in the work strip, said means comprising a' lever 41, tulcrumed at 42 to a fulcrum member 45, attachable as by screws 46qto the press bed, one arm of the lever bearing onthe head, and a spring 43, fixed atone end to the other arm, and at its opposite end to a fixed holder-44, the arrangement being such that the spring is tensioned by the descent of the platen, and acts to retract the head when the platen rises. I claim:
A punching attachment insertib-le as unit between the bed and platen of a press, and comprising a base adapted for separable attachment to a press bed, and provided with female punch members. and with means for guidingand positioning a work strip relative to saidmembers, a head adapted to bear separably-lon a press platen and be projected thereby andprovided with male punch members 'complemental to the female members,
